The guards aren't paid to protect you, they're paid to protect everyone. Since you're not everyone, you'll have to fend for yourself most of the time.
You probably won't be able to do anything about terrorist attacks, which are few and far between - but then again, you never know. Of course, you're most likely to just get attacked in a parking lot, so it's the same problem you have coming out of Wal-Mart or Kroger at night.
I don't know about everyone else's airport, but at JIA they have it set up so you just drive in to drop people off and pick them up. There's a whole parking lot just for people to wait on someone to call their cell and then go in to pick them up. They really don't make it that convenient to park and walk in, and that's the point. I always carry while at the airport, but I'm always in the car. So that solves that problem, IMO.
