The wordings of the current oath of enlistment and oath for commissioned officers are as follows:

"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God." (Title 10, US Code; Act of 5 May 1960 replacing the wording first adopted in 1789, with amendment effective 5 October 1962).

"I, _____ (SSAN), having been appointed an officer in the Army of the United States, as indicated above in the grade of _____ do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservations or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter; So help me God." Man up and take a stand. It's not just about 2A anymore. We need to be active and heard in every facet of government. The Liberals have used the squeaky wheel syndrome to push a lot of their crap through the system and it worked. It is time for us to do the same. Make some noise about our agendas and when we don't get our way we make even more noise until they shut us up by enacting legislation favorable to us.

Yup, swore that oath about every 3-4 years of my life for 20 years, taught it to all the butter-bars who were "appointed over me" (some 1/2 my age by the time I was ready to retire), part of any good Non-Com's duties, but I don't think I can get away with 'per the UCMJ part' any more as a Vet, laws I am no longer subject to, but in 1991 I took this oath and it binds me for life, so I guess I was swearing my ass away to Uncle Sam as a soldier and later an immigrant who parroted these words to ex-President Gerald Ford in an packed arena in Denver, CO with about 500 other green-carders, about 10% of us in uniform just like I was.
"I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God."
Thanks for reminding me, for some who came here those words mean nothing once they walk away a citizen, for others we hold them so dear as the 5 year long trek of legal, hardworking, and honest toil to get to that point is a testimony to how much we want what many in this nation take for granted and stop swearing anything after a pledge (not a binding oath per-say) of allegiance after high school. Throughout 20 years in the Army I found it common in so many units that many the very best officers (who became citizens B 4 entering service/OCS/ROTC) many NCO's or soldiers who really shone were like me, not home-grown. Fiercely patriotic to the new nation who gave them a much better chance at life and freedoms we never had in our original places of birth.

That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Now, this tells me that if our govenrment ceases to be "of, by and for the people," we have the right, authority and obligation to change it. And as a lot of government officials also take an oath (Obama will at his inauguration) to defend the Constitution, and obviously do not take that oath seriously, it is the people who will eventually need to make this country succeed. And survive. Time for a new patriotism, gentlemen!

Well to you Sir I say this --- I am sorry for my comment several weeks ago about you being one beer short of a six pack and that you should go to the VA.. I am a 27 year Navy Vet ( Hospital Corpsman) married to a 10 year Navy vet who is British (she is now a U.S.) She took the same oath and feels the same way you do.
