    Default Flagged During Gun Purchase

Had an interesting experience yesterday. Went to a local cabela's to buy a new deer rifle, presented two concealed carry permits, and was told by the clerk that I was "flagged" by the instant check system. The clerk thought this was odd since I had concealed carry permits and told me to check back in a few days if I have not heard from them. I am squeaky clean as far as the law is concerned, so I'm not sure what's going on. The only things I can think of is that I previously associated with an "outlaw" motorcycle club (not a member) and that my libertarian political views are well-known. I have written e-mails and blogs which were very critical of our new socialist-in-chief. I have purchased a new handgun as recently as last April with no problem, so WTF? The clerk says it's possible that my name is similar to some other bad guys and this is the reason for the "flag" (even tho I provided my SSN). Has this happened to anyone else? I'm a little suspicious that I'm on the Homeland Security watch list or something. If this is the case, we're into a whole new ball-game. Comments?

Give them a call back and see what they say.. It's the next step in finding out.. I wouldn't be too paranoid until you hear something else.. You know the old saying...

Thanks, all. Nice to get good feedback. For the record, this was an out-of-state purchase (just across the border), so I didn't have a resident permit (althouigh I can carry in that state with my UTAH permit). In my resident state, yeah, I can purchase without an instant check by presenting my in-state CCW permit.

I will call 'em back, for sure. Just can't help being paranoid, but I do always assume the worst. It just might be a computer "glitch". I'll keep you all posted. We are living in interesting times. Live free or die.

The "out of state" may be the reason, as far as I know you can't legally purchase a weapon across state lines. I'm from Texas, and while visiting the in-laws in Florida a few years back, we visited a flea market with a gun store in it. I asked to see a new model gun and was told that with an out of state license, he couldn't legally even let my handle the weapon. Check your local and fed laws. Just mt .02

I live in Florida, and when my friend from NY came down, the gun store had no issue with letting him see/handle weapons, I presume they would have sold it to him as well (with the appropriate wait time)

You can legally buy long guns out of state from a dealer. Fed law allows this , however some states require the out of state purchaser to be from a border state. I've never heard that someone couldn't touch a firearm if from another state. Sounds like the dealer didn't want to be bothered with someone that he couldn't sell to.

    Hey guys,

Just to clear up a point on this thread: You CAN purchase firearms from out-of-state. I've done it several times. What happens is that the weapon wil be sent to an FFL holder in your resident state and you pick it up from them. I've purchased firearms in Nevada and Minnesota successfully before (I live in ND).

So...I don't think this was the reason I got "flagged". Anyway...
