You repliers who rail about docs and hospitals and insurance companies ripping off medicare and medicaid etc etc--so why couldn't we reform the current system to fix these ripoffs without a complete federal takeover of healthcare? The answer is that the current pieces of garbage in the whitehouse and congress do not want to fix anything---they only want to control everything. Do you really believe that this new plan is going to fix something? Pardon my language, but are you that stupid? Name me anything "federal government" that has ever done anything within a budget. Even our military who I support with fervor, have their $500 toilet seats etc. This is a path to complete fascism and we have the egomaniac (like hitler) who is hell bent on it.

Thats pretty cheap. Have you ever run a business?
8 years med school: $360,000 (cheap from no-name college)
Malpractice insurance: $150,000 year (cheapest available)
Office & lab equipment: 2,000,000 (bare-bones models)
Fees for lab, hospital, operating room privileges: $10,000 month
Employee salaries, benefits, etc.: $30,000 per employee (for non-specialist workers).
Hell, I am in data communications and my average bill is $125 an hour. When I go to a business and work on their servers and computers and routers, etc, $300 is a normal bill. I only went to college for 2 years. Why shouldn't a doctor who saves lives and has gone to school for 10 years, and will have to go to shcool his entire career to stay up on the latest medical technology be allowed to make a nice living? From your $300 office visit, the doc puts about $30 in his pocket to take home. The rest goes to expenses and government fees.

Do you realize that putting a new medicine on the shelf costs in excess of 50 million dollars? there's years of reseach, testing, tooling, production, FDA fees, etc. etc. and the patent is only good for 10 years. this means the drug companies have 10 years to recover their costs PLUS make a profit before all the generic copies start coming from other countries.

This is why you don't see new miracle drugs coming from Cuba, Mexico, Russia, China, Canada, and all the other government rationed healthcare countries. They all wait until the good old U.S. creates it, develops it, and tests it, then they copy it. The reason you can go to Mexico or Canada and get the same pill for 800% less is because THE ONLY EXPENSE THEY HAVE IN IT IS THE COST TO MANUFACTURE it. They don't have to experiment with it, develope it, test it, create it, or engineer it. It's already been done for them.

OK - has anyone told the hospitals to quit charging a million dollars for nothing? Has anyone told the pill factories to fight for cheaper methods of creating new medicines?

I recently (May 2009) had to visit one of those hospitals who "charge a million dollars for nothing," and they saved my life. My bill was $8k. My insurance company paid for it. I had already met my deductible and have never paid a dime out of pocket. The pills that I take are $15 a month on a co-pay because of my insurance. I feel pretty good about the system we have.

Now, you are probably thinking that I am some corporate executive who has a cushy job and makes a couple of hundred thousand a year. You might think I get to play golf and booze it up over $100 Kobe fillets. WRONG! At the time this happened, I was a simple fireman making less than $25k per year. Having a great health insurance plan was one of the only benefits I received. Just like the other 2,957,990 protective service workers with an average hourly income of less than $16 per hour. Now with this bill, all of these nearly 3 million people can start paying higher taxes because of their "Cadillac" plans, and this doesn't include, garbage collection, school teachers, janitors, etc... a lot of whom are not protected under the big Union pay off scandal. Not one single government employee in NC will be given a Union pay off break, because we don't have criminal enterprises like these.

Anyone who is still backing this "big f@%$ing deal" has their own head buried in the sand, or somewhere else the sun can't shine.
