Own a house in both NJ and SC, is transporting my gun legal?

I own a house in both NJ and SC. I have a Firearms ID card from NJ, which allowed me to keep a firearm in my house. I have recently changed my residence from NJ to SC, which I am pretty sure makes my Firearms ID card invalid. However, I still own my house in NJ and my husband still lives there.

I have a CWP in SC, which I know has no reciprocity in NJ. But it does allow me to carry up to Maryland, which at that point I would have to unload and lock it in the trunk.

I called my local NJ PD, they had no clue what the answer was and they told me to call the NJ State Police. Not having any luck having the State Police get back to me or give me an answer via phone.

Does anyone know if my ID is still good in NJ since I still own my house there? I travel between SC and NJ about every 6 weeks. It's just my two daughters and myself and we usually travel at night to avoid the traffic. I hate driving unarmed and having to stop at gas stations.

Not being a NJ resident I can only tell you what I have read....

NJ Firearms Purchase ID is for purchasing long guns...doesn't really have anything to do with "keeping" a gun. The FPID is not just for residents. A non NJ resident could obtain one if they wanted to, so you changing your primary residence does not void your FPID. Just keep in mind, if you wanted to change your address in the NJ ID system, you will be going thru the application process all over again.

Be leary... Very leary. Do you have an attorney? The only reason I'm asking is a recent court case where a NJ resident was moving with his firearms was arrested and sentenced to 7 years. Google Brian Terry. My advice is to take them to a FFL dealer and ship them to another FFL dealer. This way you won't have to worry about NJ police.

Also be advised, if guns are shipped to an FFL, then the person receiving those guns must complete a form 4473, get the NICS background check and prove their state of residency.

I've seen many threads where people are going out of their home state for some trip usually involving a person travelling to/from Alaska and advice is given to ship their handguns to an FFL at the destination. Well, now the FFL has possession of handguns that they can't transfer to the owner, because the owner is not/can not prove same state residency as required for handgun transfers.

Update: I spoke with the NJ State Police and they told me I can bring my gun into NJ to my house as long as it is locked and in the trunk. I made sure to let them know I am no longer a resident of NJ, and was told as long as I still own property in NJ I am good. They also sent me an email with the specific law. I printed it out and will carry it with me just in case.

As far as I knew, and I think it was because of NJ, there is a Federal law that let's you transfer fire arms from one state to another, unloaded in your trunk (unless otherwise permitted to carry them), from one state you are allowed to have them to the state you are traveling to, that you are allowed to have them in, even if you are not allowed to in the states in between.
