Despite the obvious rough treatment, it will probably remain serviceable for a long time to come. Amazing.

Some people have a point to prove, and don't mind spending money to do it. Lots of people post videos of torture tests on youtube. Handguards for AK's aren't that expensive, and for some, the glory of the bragging rights is priceless.

For some, the bragging rights are essential. Spray and pray serves no purpose unless your position is being overrun and you're out of Claymores. Even then, 3 round bursts are more effective.
