Mitt Romney and Gun Control

Mitt Romney and Gun Control

In the recent Presidential debate, Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann said America’s voters did not need to “settle” for the moderate candidate. Amen to that.

And gun owners do NOT want candidates who talk out of both sides of their mouths.

As the Gun Owners of America’s Board of Directors looks at the Republican candidates running to unseat radical anti-gun President Obama, we see several who have strong pro-gun backgrounds. Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Michelle Bachman all have solid pro-gun records and deserve a hard look from pro-gunners.

At least one frontrunner candidate stands in contrast with a decidedly mixed record on the gun issue. While Mitt Romney likes to “talk the pro-gun talk,” he has not always walked the walk.

“The Second Amendment protects the individual right of lawful citizens to keep and bear arms. I strongly support this essential freedom,” Romney assures gun owners these days.

But this is the same Mitt Romney who, as governor, promised not to do anything to “chip away” at Massachusetts’ extremely restrictive gun laws.

“We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts; I support them,” he said during a gubernatorial debate. “I won’t chip away at them; I believe they protect us and provide for our safety.”

Even worse, Romney signed a law to permanently ban many semi-automatic firearms. “These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense,” Romney said in 2004. “They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.”

Romney also spoke in favor of the Brady law’s five day waiting period on handguns. The Boston Globe quotes Romney saying, “I don’t think (the waiting period) will have a massive effect on crime but I think it will have a positive effect.”

Mitt Romney doesn’t seem to understand the meaning of “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.”

And that makes it all the more troubling that Romney refuses to answer GOA’s simple candidate questionnaire. In our more than 36 years of experience, a candidate is usually hiding anti-gun views if he or she refuses to come clean in writing with specific commitments to the Second Amendment.

Today, Romney may be a favorite “Republican Establishment” candidate of the national press corps. But that is exactly what gun owners DON’T need in a new President. We need someone who will stan

I can honestly say that Romney had never been a consideration with me. He talks the talk but can’t walk the walk.

Romney is no different than obama and most other politicians running for office.  It’s “don’t pay attention to what I have done or said in the past, just listen to what I am saying now!”   Romney’s anti  – gun mentality is a matter of record!  That’s what we should judge him on!  Not just being anti-gun, but realize that anti-gun is also an anti-freedom mentality…you CANNOT separate the two!

  • Munkeyhunter

I lived in Ma. M. Romney couldn’t fill a pothole let alone run the most powerful nation in the world. Just another rich guy who wants to be POTUS.

  • TexasCHLHolder

Why do you say Obama is anti-gun? He’s gotten an F from the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence for not implementing any of their recommendations. He hasn’t initiated any gun legislation while he has been in office. Facts are facts. Don’t condemn him just because he a Black Democrat.

    • Franki

gettin an F from Brady just means he was not as severe as they wanted- he is not a pro gun president.  Where is his support for national reciprocity.  He has not supported the pro gun movement and does not want Americans to be able to defend them selves.  If he was pro gun he would make it well know in America-

He is in support of the UN treaty banning private ownership of firearms. He wants to make our constitution subordinate to the UN and in doing so outlaw guns without having to pass a law to do it.

      • Calvinius

        No such UN treaty exists.

Texas- why did you have to comment on the presidents race? This has nothing to do with race- it has everything to do with ideology- the President is a radical Democrat- he is anti- gun at his core-.  he does not support the rights and freedoms of Americans- he has been trampling the Consitution since he was elected.  None of this has anything to do with skin color.  We are condeming him because he is a radical democrat and is destroying the freedoms our forefathers fought and died for.

      • Calvinius

That’s because the NRA might as well be the “National Republicans Association”. The care less about supporting gun rights than they do about supporting Republican politicians. Even when they’re anti-gun Republicans like Romney.

oh lord here comes the race issue again

  • Thank god I moved!

Romney has a terrible record in mass….he is a pompass ass. I used to live in mass and they changed all the long gun reg’s and made all the legal ppl jump hoops to get thier so called fid card. (finger printed and chief of each town could take thier time to issuse the permit) Took a yr for mine. Thank God i smartened up and moved to NC, open carry! Check all his voting records in congress also, part time man…..more missed votes then votes. If you all want a part time pres then vote him in! When I vote it wont be for him!

    • JPKirkpatrick

I agree, he does not need our consideration.
However, you better watch out for your NC Governor… She sides with Obama and thinks it is a great idea to cancel the 2012 elections under the ruse of a National Emergency due to the economy woes.  They also have a “Emergency Rule” on your being able to protect yourself with a gun during their “declared emergency” (hurricanes, fires, hang nails, etc).

  • McHenry

How does Obama have a terrible record with gun control? He’s voted to allow the concealed carry in national parks hasn’t he?  He’s also not passed any new gun control methods has he?

So if you’d be as kind to backup the claim with facts, it would only help to increase your credibility. Otherwise, everything you post won’t have a shred of credability with me.

    • JPKirkpatrick

“Project Gun Runner”; “Fast & Furious”; “UN ATT”; while he has been president are all anti-gun initiatives to prime the way for American Anti-Gun laws and regulations.
While he was a state senator in Illinois, he was very anti-gun, the same for his federal senate time (as short as it was).
Wake up and quit drinking the kool-aid, he’ll take your gun as soon as he can, believe it!

    • Franki

Just because el Prezidente has not introduced any new anti gun legislation he has not really spoken strongly for pro gun rights either.  Where is his support for National Reciprocity?  He is a radical LIB and does not really support our rights to defend ourselves.ois not pro gun   He will say what is needed to be said to fool people- he is not pro gun

  • Utbcowboy

Actually Bush signed the national parks bill into law.  a lot of blue dog dems warned Obama about the repercussions for them if they had to vote on any legislation.  given his past voting record in the senate, its obvious how Oboma would sign.  Also the whole blaming the arming of cartels on citizens, while his helpers were setting the stage for more tragedy.  As for Romney I don’t think he is on our side either.

As far as I’m concerned Romeney would be no better, if not worse than Obama. Especially when it comes to gun rights.

  • Kevinkr

As a democratic liberal, and supporter of the 2nd amendment, the NRA and conceal carry, I wish we could take politics OUT of this, unfortunately, we cannot. I want to say, whatever your political beliefs, we all share a common goal, the right to bear arms.

  • Kevinkr

One other fun thing, I did my training with 7 men who were conservatives, We laughed ate lunch together, compared pistols we bought, and talked about families. It is proof, that this issue, the 2nd amendment DOES bring together all political beliefs. At the end of the day a few said to me, “now you are a conservative”. I laughed, and said “nice meeting all of you”.

  • Kevinkr

Somehow, the second amendment is played with over the years like a toy. It should be amended so NO president, of either party, can even touch it, and it should supersede ALL state laws. End of politics in this, and we as trained, honest citizens are allowed self defense.

    • JPKirkpatrick

Gee, my comment had to be approved by a “Moderator” before it could be posted…
That’s the first time that has ever happened!  I wonder if we have a real 1st Amendment too!

  • Kevinkr

Why, is not the 2nd amendment, changed to remove any president, congress, from even touching it? And why should it not supersede all state laws. Make it untouchable, and the politics are removed. and all of we responsible, trained shooters are left alone. Just trying to get the damned politics out of the equation. we come from diverse backgrounds, but we share this one important goal, and it brings Americans together, not apart.

    • Anonymous

      Kevinkr;
The 2nd Amendment is the ONLY amendment that is written so that it cannot be changed by anyone, Congress, The President, or The Courts!  It is the only part of the Constitution that is empowered by the statement “…Shall Not Be Infringed…”
Yet, it is constantly being abused by all branches of the government.
That happens because we allow it to happen.  We The People are the ones that are responsible for the enforcement of the 2nd Amendment.  If it gets changed, it’s because WE allow it to happen without rising up and telling the government “Enough is Enough!”
The Oath Keepers is the only organization that says “…Not On Our Watch…”

      • Don

Unfortunately, as we sleep tonight, Obama and Hillary are scheming with the UN on a small arms treaty which if passed, would take away our right to the second amendment rights. I received a call this afternoon (1-23-2012) from the NRA soliciting donations for the cause. Wayne La Pierre is scheduled to speak before the UN and tell them that our second amendment rights will NOT be infringed upon. Check with your NRA newsletters!!!

  • JPKirkpatrick

Uh Oh!  What happens if Romney gains the GOP nomination?
You going to vote for Obama over Romney?
Granted, I don’t like either of the two, but I won’t vote for Obama, either actively or by Not Voting!
I would put on my Gas Mask and vote for Romney.  Not my choice, but the lesser of two evils…
MAN, I wish Gov. Chris Christie would run…

    • Calvinius

Even though Romney’s record on gun rights is far worse than Obama’s? Obama has never signed or voted for an assault weapons ban, after all.

    • whatareyoustupid

Chris Christie? Are you effing kidding? The guy is just as much a liberal anti-gun piece of garbage as Robamney..

  • concealed cary holder, Wi.

I Didn’t vote for Obama. I always vote. It’s a real concern about ALL candidates these days. It’s a darn shame we have to vote on the “lesser of two evils” as JR stated
