I use my Weatherby .300 Mag with an 3x9 Nikon Scope My effective range on Average, is roughly 300-400 yards. I know my weapon is effective out to 600+ yards, but as I get older I have set limits to my range.

Last thing I want to do, Is to wound an Animal. I firmly believe 1 shot 1 kill

I have a Savage 30.06 with 4.5-14 scope. I would say my effective is 200-300 yrds as of right now. I recommend a scope 3-9x. The deer I shot this past year was <50yrds and hard to find at 4.5x.

First thing is decide on what caliber works for you. Anything in the .30 caliber range should do. Second, understand your surroundings and where you will be hunting. Prarie, deep woods, or swamp are all factors. Then comes YOU. What are you comfortable shooting? A lot of people shoot .270 for a flat shooting round but it will not punch through shrubs like a 30-30. Do some research on the place you are going to hunt and the caliber might come easier. However, know your weapon and how it shoots well so you don't injure an animal that you never take from the woods.

I couldn't agree more with the previous post. know your area and hunting conditions. I use a 336 marlin in 35 Remington with a 220 grain lever revolution round. good for 200-300 yards. But most of the territory only allows a shot inside of 90 yards. 35 Remington is a good brush gun there are some open fields I would take a 400 yard shot with my Nikon 3-9 x 60 mm NSC scope proven and tested at that yardage. all around great set up

Ruger M77 30.06, Leupold 3-9x40. My longest kill was 475 yards(not with my 30.06) on a whitetail hunt in Idaho but here in western Washington most shots I've taken were under 200 yards and half of those were under 100.

i wouldnt use anything less than a .270. that, 30-06, .308, and 30-30 are probably most popular. as for scope i would say it depends on terrain. wooded areas a 9-10 power is fine because there wont be long shooting lanes. this shoul be fine out to 3-400 yds. if you are out west in the open like wyoming or montana where you can see forever you can use higher power scope. i like .308 personally.

I use a Savage 30-06 with a 3-9 power scope. comfort range with that weapon system is about 300 yards in the terrain that I am currently in.

I have a Winchester model 70 in 30-06 and also in 280 they are both great guns for Deer and work extremely well. I would recommend that what ever you are comfortable with and works for you.
