  1. Irony

I stopped to use the restroom at the Alabama welcome center yesterday. This was out in front of the building: Irony-1375795194158.jpg
Not 20 feet from there, this sign was on the front door: Irony-1375795258401.jpg

I'm guessing the policy is because of Alabama's law against carrying in government buildings, but I found it pretty funny.

I find it pretty sad. They only dare to defend their rights when and where it pleases them. Government buildings are far from being the safest places to be, too. Of course Kansas is the same way. We just passed laws where you could carry in government buildings unless the city bans it. Well guess what most of the towns around here are doing? At the very least they've got another year to ban them before they have to get a security system in place to guarantee customers' safety if they can't carry their own weapon inside.

Ironic, but not funny. Rest areas are places to stay exceptionally alert at your surroundings. Thanks for the warning. If I am traveling through Alabama, I'll look to stop at truck stops, rather than the rest areas.

  6. Rest areas are very dangerous places. Somehow, I almost always forget to take anything out of my pocket and leave it in the car. If it is concealed, it is therefore concealed. Unless you need to use it then no one knows that you have it. If you need it, then you need it! Nuff said.

Truckstops are not much safer. I carry everywhere I go. There have been a couple of muggings and one shooting at a truckstop in the last couple of months.

Gary and Linda Hass from OK, stopped at a modern New Mexico rest area along I-40, on their way to Colorado in 2010. Both their certified CCW's were stowed back in their trailer, most likely their being unsure of various, unpredictable state laws and officers of the law, on carrying weapons. Linda was commandeered at gunpoint by a prison escapees cousin/girlfriend, as she left the ladies room. They both were then accompanied by McCluskey, a violent prison escapee from Arizona, to the truck where Gary was waiting... unarmed. Both Gary and Linda's bodies were burned beyond recognition inside their RV, later found in a remote area near Santa Rosa NM. Their truck was later found in Albuquerque New Mexico.

Government buildings are the Peoples' buildings. They should never be posted!

(Well, ok, maybe prisons and jails. Possibly courthouses. But nothing else.)

why would you leave valuables in an unattended car?

I agree!!! If I HAVE to make a restroom stop, especially at night, at a rest stop there is NO WAY I am going in unarmed. If it is illegal I'll just chance it.
