Thread: .380 ACP: is it good enough or no?

  1. Another possibilty is the 9mm Makarov. Power level is roughly between the .380 and 9mm Luger My carry gun is the CZ 83 with 13 rounds or my Star Firestar 9mm with 8. I like the smaller size and concealabity of these due to the warmer weather/less clothing here in Arizona.

I think .380 Auto is a perfectly acceptable choice for concealed carry. Depending on where I'm going and what I'm wearing, I carry either my compact .380 (Beretta 84F) or my full-size .40S&W (Beretta 96 Brigadier). As far as .380 ammunition, I especially like the 90 gr. Federal Hydra-Shok JHP.

Just saw this ballistics review of the Hornady CD .380, For those of you with penetration issues, AVG of 13" in plain gel, 12" after 4 layers of denim.

  5. With the .380 I would be worried about penetration. I take penetration over expansion any day. So i would go with fmj.

  6. Critical Defense 380 does a lovely job of penetration in calibrated gel. If you search YouTube you will see that bone messes that up. I don't feel outgunned with my Bersa Thunder 380 DLX loaded with Gold Dots or Hornady XTP.
    Sincerely......Batty
