The reason for most pocket guns is for a back up gun (BUG). When the back up gun becomes your primary carry, IMO it's due to mere convenience. I'd rather not trust my life to a .380 over a .40 or .45 due to convenience.

If truly I would not carry based upon this inconvenience, then yes, I would guess the .380 is the way to go.

However, I've always been an advocate of getting the best firearm for your purposes and then learn how to carry it well, rather than find a gun that is tiny and easy to carry and hopefully it will do what you want.

You are completely missing the point. Did you actually read the article or did you just comment based on the title?

I thought so as well. I am pretty similar to the author, in that my LCP is ALWAYS with me, while my larger caliber guns may not be. and with a spare mag, I defy any attacker to withstand an initial 7 rounds of .380, with a back up 6 if needed. Oh, and I purposefully do not hang out where I might faced the 250lb guy on PCP, that's called situational awareness

Shoot whatever caliber you're good with! I'm not a fan of pocket guns because my pockets won't fit any gun of any size, so why carry something that small when I might as well carry something a bit larger? Sure, an LCP would be super easy to hide no matter what, but my M&P Shield is also really easy. I can't foresee a time when I'll pocket carry, since I don't see them changing the design of women's pants any time soon and I'm hardly going to wear men's, so the Shield is as small as I'm willing to go. I don't plan to actually carry while I'm at home... risk of invasion is really low where I am, so I just keep it in a small, fast-open safe near by.

I also plan to not be where there are any large people on PCP if at all possible!

After the article (blog post) I linked above, the author submitted the following, including two interesting links for you caliber junkies.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! I'd like to address a common theme I saw in the comments under my first article. I am guessing that as I predicted, a fair number of people didn't read the article but had a visceral response to the title alone and commented. To clarify, I own and carry .45acp as my primary weapon...when I am out of my home. If I am not wearing a belt then I have my LCP in my pocket and most of the time while at home this is the case. I saw multiple comments relegating the .380 to a pointy stick or BB. I saw equal number of comments giving the .45acp mystical powers of stopping someone with a single shot. I worry for those that have THAT much confidence in the round that they don't train follow up shots or magazine changes. The FBI states you need a minimum of 12" of penetration to maximize lethality. Even then, as evidenced by the case of this LEO, it isn't always the case. Shot placement is key. You must hit the central nervous system to truly stop a threat immediately. Even a big hole caused by the .45acp may not incapacitate someone and they can continue to attack you as you wait for them to bleed out enough that they become hypotensive and pass out. The whole point of my first article is to get you thinking about always being prepared with something. ALWAYS! It is a proven fact that the .380 has 100% greater penetration and expansion than the .000! As mentioned in the article, whatever you have on your person is more effective (at the time) than the larger caliber in your gun safe.

I believe the .380 has an image problem. Much like the padded bra that became the Wonder bra, or the girdle that became Spanks, the .380 will be accepted if we call it the 9X17mm. As for carrying a gun in your pocket. It does not matter if it is a micro .45, .40, or 9mm. It should be in a holster.

  10. I have 3 CC guns. The first I bought was a 38 S&W Bodyguard. The next I bought was the S&W .380 Bodyguard and the last gun I bought was the Sig P938 in 9m. The gun I carry 95% of the time... the .380. Why? Comfort. It just fits deep conceal best. It pocket fits best and it's virtually the same size as the Sig but lighter. It's with me when I am working around the house. It's with me when I go for a ride and it's with me when I go to the office. I like shooting the Sig more and it is a better shooting gun but once again the .380 fits best so I gravitate to it. I love the gun.

A good well done article. Thank you for posting. The best weapon is the one with you; not at home but in your pocket when you need it.
