Carry permits for backpacking in bear country

I live in Indiana and have my lifetime permit, but have yet to get a gun to carry. This summer (late September) I am traveling to the north cascade mountains in Washington state. The area is grizzly country, and I want to know how I can get a permit to carry (open or concealed) while backpacking. Anyone know the best way for me to achieve this? I know they have "non-resident" permits, but you have to apply in person, and since it's across the country, this won't be possible.

Any ideas? I know michigans resident permit will work, but I'm not sure if I can get non res or if that would even be accepted in Washington state.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What are the laws regarding open carry in Washington?
Open carry in Washington is not restricted by state law (other than those places listed above where concealed carry is prohibited). It is strongly recommended that you avoid any appearance of threatening someone i.e. handling your gun idling, etc as this could result in arrest and prosecution.

So according to this from this website, open carry is legal in Washington State. You may want to approach this from a different direction. Have you considered trying for a Wa. non-resident hunting license for bear? Doesn't mean you have to shoot one, but you probably can't use a pistol. Check their hunting laws.

Just be sure to unload it inside a vehicle in Washington State. Illegal to have a loaded handgun in a vehicle in Washington state without a recognized CPL.
Anyone who says, "I support the 2nd amendment, BUT"... doesn't. Element of Surprise: a mythical element that many believe has the same affect upon criminals that Kryptonite has upon Superman.

Have you Considered a Non-resident Idaho or Utah Permit? "I am Not A lawyer" but happened to look on Washington's website Concealed Weapon Reciprocity | Washington State and it looks like both issue non-resident permits that meet the requirements.
