Thread: Brady Center sues Georgia town over gun law

  1. Kwimby is correct in that the law on the books in Nelson, GA provides any household the ability to not have to follow the law based on their own perogative. The Brady Campaign simply did not read through the law in its entirety and are sueing on baseless statements/misinformation.

As much as I despise the Brady Campaign and encourage gun ownership, I can't help but agree here. Requiring people to own and gun or fining them if they don't...they're basically being fined either way. And how do you keep track of who owns a gun and who doesn't? To me this would create a registry...
There will be no fines and there is no registry. Read more closely. There are exemptions built in. This is just another Brady publicity stunt.

    Sent from behind enemy lines.

    didnt say this one would.

putting in all of the ways to get out of the "mandatory" ownership makes it a lot less mandatory and pretty useless. i can understand that if you are going to make it mandatory that the exemptions should be those that are legally not able to obtain a weapon.

I agree, no one will be fined, or made to buy a gun, this is similar to Kennesaw. If you know this law exists, then are you really going to take a chance on trying to do anything in this town? No, you are going to a school or other gun free zone. Sad but if the law states the ownership of guns is a must but never enforced, then it is like every other law we have. If some one has an objection or want to fight the law, then should come from the people of the town and not an outside anti gun entity. Brady campaign needs to get out of Georgia, the South and keep their ass back up in New York.

The law is purely symbolic. Every town in the USA has either a police dept. or sheriff's dept. to protect it's citizenry. But the SCOTUS has ruled several years ago that the police have no obligation to protect individual citizens. So the towns of Nelson & Kennesaw have passed these laws to say, "Since our LEOs can't be everywhere all the time we can't really protect you, so you need to be able to protect yourself and your family and the best way to do that is with a firearm." There is no punishment for not owning one and nobody knows if you have one or not. After Kennesaw passed that ordinance in response to a Chicago suburb passing an ordinance banning handgun ownership within their city limits residential burglaries dropped about 40 % in Kennesaw because the BGs didn't know for sure who had a gun & who didn't.

This is a publicity stunt by the Brady Bunch and any Federal judge in Ga. will most likely throw it out. Too bad they can't be fined and jailed for filing a frivilous lawsuit and wasteing the time of the court.

  7. our Great Leader with the help of the Supreme Court has demonstrated that is it well within the rights of government to require citizens to buy a product and fine and punish them for not doing so. I'd rather be forced to buy a gun than anything else. At least if the government forces me to buy a gun I can then use the gun to keep it from forcing me to buy anything else!

But there are a number of way out, simply opposing guns will exempt a resident.

They are probably modeling this after Kenasaw GA, which has similar law in effect for years. It is not enforced, no one has been fined for not having a gun, AND the crime rate has gone down, significantly since it was enacted. It's simple the bg's know the odds of meeting an armed vs. unarmed homeowner is much greater when more homeowners have guns.

Didn't George Washington require men of militia age to own a gun? I don't see the problem with the law.
