Angry Response to email sent to Sen Murphy (CT)

Thank you for contacting me about preventing gun violence. I appreciate your correspondence and hope that you find this response helpful.

Gun violence prevention is a sensitive and complicated issue that can be very divisive. While we may not agree on all aspects of how to best enact change, it is important to remember that we do all have the same priorities at heart: the safety of our children, the traditions of our forefathers, and the freedom of our fellow Americans. I can assure you that I am working hard every day to ensure that all of these priorities can be achieved.

The tragedy in Newtown will forever serve as a reminder of what can happen when even one deranged person can gain access to a deadly weapon. In addition to the shock and horror felt by our nation as we watched that awful day in December unfold, we continue to experience gun violence around the nation every day. These events must end.

All of these senseless and tragic losses confirm that it is time to take real action that will make it more difficult to commit murder in this country. I believe that background checks for all gun purchases, decreased availability of high-capacity magazines and military-style assault weapons, and improved access to quality mental health care are all critical and Constitutional components of a much-needed comprehensive gun violence prevention plan.

As you may be aware, I was a strong supporter of the Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013 (S.649). This bill would have taken some important steps towards keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of criminals and off of our streets. The Senate's failure to enact these common sense gun control provisions was a devastating missed opportunity. Congress has the responsibility to enact meaningful legislation to keep Americans safe, and I am incredibly disappointed by my colleagues who chose to side with the gun lobby rather than standing up for important, bipartisan legislation widely supported by their constituents.

However, the Republican-led filibuster that stalled our efforts on this vote will not be the last word spoken on the issue. Preventing future gun violence remains a priority for me and my office, and we will not back down from this fight. I will continue to work hard in the Senate to fight for comprehensive and efficient legislation that will counter the epidemic of gun crime facing our nation.

Thank you again for contacting me about this matter. I appreciate hearing from you and assure you that I will always do my best to represent the views of my constituents in the Senate. In the future, please do not hesitate to call me in my Connecticut office at (860) 549-8463 or my Washington office at (202) 224-4041.

    Every Best Wish,

    Christopher S. Murphy
    United States Senator

A reply back letting him know his response does not constitute a representation of your desires as a constituent is in order. Not that he cares obviously.

I fired a email right back explaining he must not have even read my original email. I also pointed out all of the gun violence and murders that occurred over the past weekend. But you are right, I'm sure he does not even care what I had to say.

I also pointed out all of the gun violence and murders that occurred over the past weekend, which the recent gun laws enacted did nothing to prevent!

None of the anti gun politicians care what their constituency thinks. He simply sent you a summary of the Democratic talking points. They all say the exact same things in their replies.

Meanwhile ignoring the fact that NO LAW will EVER keep guns out of the hands of criminals determined to get them. Same with high capacity magazines. Of course three loaded 10 round magazines have about the same effect as a 30 round magazine.
