Thread: Need a Countdown Timer

  1. Need a Countdown Timer

Anybody know where I can find a cheap (but also decent) countdown timer? Or I guess not necessarily WHERE I can find one, but does anyone have a brand or model they recommend? I'm good at find a deal if I just know what to look for. Thanks!

  3. Also, one of the reasons I want the timer is to try out all the different federal law enforcement agencies' qualification tests. But I have one question about the part of each test where they must do a magazine change. Do they have to change magazines on an empty chamber and then reload a round in the chamber, or do they already have one chambered and simply swap magazines? Like for example, the FBI test requires 4 rounds, magazine swap, then 4 more rounds. Do they have 5 rounds in that first mag and 3 rounds in the 2nd mag so that they don't have to drop the slide after they swap? To me that seems a bit cheap if that is in fact what they do. In the real world that wouldn't be the scenario, and could take away precious seconds if it has not been practiced.

Do you want a 1. iPhone or Android based app for phone or tablet, 2. a PC or Apple based timer for a lap top, or 3. a hand held digital or mechanical device? The arguments for Q.1 & 2 are the capability to record both time and actions, plus a slug of free apps at the Kindle Shop (Amazon), Google Store (Android only), or the Apple [support] Stores online. For handheld digital or mechanical, Google the question and criteria and then Amazon or eBay will be where you head to for a purchase.

Disclaimer: I have no financial interest in the companies named, nor any connections what so ever other than having used them in the past for other products/services.

I had not even thought about using my iPhone. Do you know of any particular apps that are very good?

  6. I can't find an app that will beep and then beep again after a set amount of time.

If you have an android phone, (I have Verizon something or other, so "HI NSA!") look at the "clock" function on the phone. when I open mine there are 4 tabs across the top for ALARMS, TIMER, WORLDCLOCK & STOPWATCH. The timer can be set to down to 1 second. Might not be apps because it is already on most phones.

If you're after what I think you're after, just take someone to the range with you and have them say "go" when they hit start. If you are by yourself then time yourself a few times to see how long it takes from hitting "start" on the timer (not rushed) to being in your ready position (to draw, to fire, whatever) then add that to whichever drill you're doing. It ain't perfect, but it's great for practice.

But I'm trying to find something that will beep so I will know when to draw and then beep again after a set amount of second.

I just edited the post above with an answer to that. I knew what you were getting at.

Gotcha! I actually found an app that does it but its not very loud or anything. If it vibrated it would work perfectly. But I can always revert to what you said.

If you have (or are willing to buy) a pair of in-ear headphones, wired or Bluetooth, they can be worn in conjunction with over-the-ear noise protection and then you could hear the beeps you're wanting to hear.
No one has ever heard me say that I "hate" cops, because I don't. This is why I will never trust one again though: You just never know...
