Thread: That guy with the axe handle? Fight him - don't shoot him!

Really Easy. If someone were to come at me with an Axe handle I would fear for my life.

    You know the rest.
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state,
the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

For example, if someone comes at me with an axe handle (I'm assuming there's no axe on the end of it), then I may play the game for a bit to see if I can disarm/subdue/turn the whoopin' around on the other guy before deciding to escalate. However, I have to imagine that escalating when that point is reached may be quite difficult if they've gained the upper hand. Step one would probably play out as a back shuffle and warning that he may want to think long and hard about what he's about to do, then hoping that he doesn't use inferior judgment.
Head on down to Hobart or West MacArthur and you can see how that scenario plays out. FWIW, on April 28 2008 after being arrested for open carry and having my only 2 handguns confiscated by EC police, I walked home from a party and was attacked by a mob with baseball bats. Probably close to 20 people watched and nobody called 911 until I had been hit about 5 times. My 6 year old niece was walking with me and witnessed the whole thing. Had I not rushed them, they probably would have killed her. In practicality, baseball bats and axe handles are very very similar. I suffered hearing loss in my right ear and have slightly dimmed vision in my right eye as well. Lucky to be alive. Once they pull that weapon, no matter what it is, you'd be an idiot to try and talk them down. Simply having it shows that they've made up their mind. I know that your medical background makes you want to spare somebody some work, but at what cost?

That's a game I'll play to win. It's all in the context, if someone who Is not physically strong enough to severely injure or kill me with the axe handle, deescalate away. If I think trying to deescalate can get me seriously injured or killed...well, shouldn't bring an axe handle to a gun fight.
Not even a good hit, just a well-directed one. It only takes about 4.5 pounds of force to the chin to knock somebody out. A weak straight jab with any blunt object when unexpected will do the trick.

Just because the BG does not have a gun does NOT mean your life is not in danger. I concur that I am to old to take a a$$whooping. If someone comes at me he had bettered be ready for the hereafter. There was a time that guys did settle things with their fists but now days they will shoot you for a stick of gum.

  6. Same call here. I'm 58, I have other hardware that would defeat an axe handle. Someone charges me with one, he will stop.

I'm surprised we haven't heard more ridiculous nonsense to try as was given the ladies to try and thwart a rape:

We could blow a whistle, urinate or vomit on the attacker, run, where there is nowhere to hide, tell the attacker you have aids, and be careful he didn't get any blood on him while he murdered you. Scream. Tell him you're on your period (never mind).

And possibly the best leftist conceived thwart; fart continuously so your attacker is overcome, and runs screaming from the area (OK, this wasn't leftist conceived, but seemed appropriate).

So, if someone wields an axe handle for a simple "whoop ass", or "beat down", on me, I suggest he bring his jammies, in case he goes to sleep.

  7. I believe that in Minnesota, a person is required to attempt to flee the scene of a perceived attack before using deadly force Or you WILL go to the penitentiary. Seen it done.

Key word here is "attempt" - damn - I tried to get away, but didn't work . . . . golly gee what can I do next . . . . (insert the solution of your choice). I am of the same thinking as many, at my age, back condition and lack of speed an ax handle may as well be an atom bomb. The condition to use lethal force is immediate fear of death or great bodily harm - that would do it.

If someone has something in their hand with which they can fracture my skull and kill me then I consider them armed and will respond accordingly.

BTW I'm too old to run away.

I have actually been in this situation. 30 years ago I was assaulted by a moron with an axe handle. When he raised the axe handle over his head and started to walk towards me (range, slightly less than 20 feet.) My response was to draw my satin nickel Commander and say, I wouldn't... Just at the point that I decided that his next step would be his last, he turned around and walked back to his car and drove off. That was the only time I had to draw in 39 years. If I never have to do it again, it won't break my heart, but I will, if I need to.
