    Hey All,
Have a P40 with around 200 rounds through the barrel. How often if ever do you completely dissasemble, solvent clean, and reoil your weapon? Have heard never take apart the lower receiver but that just seems wrong. On my other pistols after a year or so grit and crap gets everywhere inside. Where can one find complete breakdown and reassemble instructions?

I have never totally stripped any of my pistols past the field strip level, except for my 1911's and then it was the removal of the firing pins and extractors for inspection and cleaning. I have used Q-tips coated with GUNK to wipe the inside of the recievers down, what I can get to, anyway. Then re-oil and re-assemble.
Good question, got me to thinking

Unless you are having a problem then I'd just clean it the best you can. Spraying with Win oil will loosen up any crud. Then use compressed air to blow out the excess and loose crud. It should be good to go then.

The thing is that if I have a problem I am afraid it will happen when I really need my weapon to work.

I do not know how often you have to go further then a field stripping. My personal thoughts would be as follows. Using the procedure to check the firing pin safety. If, with the slide in hand and firing pin block depressed the pin does not move freely in and out (within the small amount of play allowed) when the slide is tilted I would think that maybe additional cleaning would be in order. Whether you do the brake cleaner/lube blow dry method or complete disassembly is up to your own level of courage and coordination. I found a slide disassembly tutorial in a glock formum. (if the link breaks search on Karh detail strip on google). I have not had the balls to try it yet ... maybe with my new P45 so if I can't get it back together I still have my EDC PM9 while it goes back to Kahr.
