a buddy of mine has 3 XD's, 9mm and .40cal service models (4 inch) and a .45acp tactical (5 inch)... i shot them and loved them all... but i bought a glock 30SF when my time came... fit my hand a lot better, smaller footprint for me (i'm a tall and lanky guy so it made a huge difference), and it's point and shoot... i feel i need all the advantages in a gunfight, so i carry it much more often than my 1911... plus the glock's simple look was sexy to me, the xd had to many lines and cuts in it... the glock looked like a business gun, the xd like a prom queen... having said that my buddy has shot xd's well over 25,000 rounds combined and only 1 F2F problem plagued his 9mm, very decent track record...

all up to the person who is pulling the trigger, try and buy, that's my motto...

    glock vs xd

i would recommend the XD over the glock in that the CCW arena in that while the magazine capacities are the same, the xd has a much better trigger and includes the grip safety as a safety back up. there are numerous examples of police holstering thier glock and part of the shirt or something getting into the trigger guard and accidentally discharging the firearm. if the gun were dropped and something accientally got into the trigger guard, the XD wont accidentally discharge. i like the finishes, the lines, the ambidextrous magazine release in case you have to change hands. I also like the loaded chamber indicator on the top of the slide that lets you in the dark slide your hand over the top of the slide and tell instantly that the gun is loaded, and feeling the nipple in the back of the slide knowing that the gun is cocked. while it operates basically the same as a glock, i really like the options that you get in the XD over the glock.

With that said, I've shot both side by side and still prefer the Glock. Don't like the excessive "safety features" on the XD. My recommendation would be to have your friend shoot both guns and decide which one fits him best. Don't be like the great majority of gun owners and decide after you've purchased the gun that you don't like it.gf
I have worked alongside several different Police Departments as an Armed SO for an International Security Co. and mostly all of those Officers carried either Beretta M-9's or S&W M&P's in .40 caliber, (one dept carried Sig's). But I have yet to find any carrying a Glock. I support your advice given though.

Lee County (AL) Sheriff's Department was carrying Glock 23's the last time I noticed what was in a Deputy's holster. They got on the .40 bandwagon really early (they were already using it in August of '91 when I got mine) and used the S&W 4006 for a couple years before going to the Glock 22, then the 23. Several of the bigwigs there are die hard Glock fans.

The Opelika (AL) Police Department was carrying the same model until a few years ago when they swapped to a Sig in .40 (which one exactly, I don't remember). OPD swapped because their nearest backup was normally the Auburn (AL) City Police Department or the now defunct Auburn University Police Department instead of the county sheriff's department and they both had swapped to a .40 Sig 10 years ago. Before that, OPD were using the S&W 4506, if I remember correctly. Auburn City was using a 9mm Sig prior to the .40 and AUPD had used the S&W 4006 and a S&W Performance Center .40 built on the compact .45 frame before going to the Sig.

you could say it's a matter of opinion. you could also say they both sell quality products. my x supervisor has a gen 1 glock 9mm that has been cleaned 3 times in 25 years and i watched him fire 50 rds 2 weeks ago with it.
my glocks have lasted oh , 15 years . only ammo related issues and few at that. my .45's (g30's and 21's) are nothing but perfect. for years. springfield sells good stuff but when they can compare in longevity to glock i'll say they are "as good"
*Drop a glock then drop a xd (loaded of course) you dont want to drop that xd .
*look in the holsters of any cop you see for the next year or so and compare the brand count.
*bury both brands in sandy mud for a week then fire both
*dont oil a xd for 3 months or 1000 rds then fire a non oiled glock after 6 months.
*If you want a camry buy a camry ,not a copied poduct unless the copy is better. in this case(glock vs xd) the original has not been surpassed in any catagorie. i do conceed glocks lack of ergonomic perfection. xd's feel great.
I wish the American xd was an improvement on the austrian glock product but it's not. we are here but if your on a sandy battlefield you need a glock. more than a sig , h&k ,baretta...
accuracy , durability , ease of use , longevity , design...all still in glocks favor. ergonomics can be given to xd but i find a big bore glock perfectly comfortable. theres one for every hand size and soon interchangeable backstraps will take that catagorie back
I feel i can boast because they are that far ahead of all the immitations. ask 3/4's of the LEO's in the US.
your buddy will like his xd very much but it's not the better, original concept gun.
wow , i really sound like a finatic but i own several brands of hg. i just carry glock though. I apologize for sounding so sure of myself and for the length of my post.

    Glock vs XD

I narrowed my gun choices between the XD and Glocks. Although I like the safety mechanisms of the XD, I don't need a gun to tell me I have a loaded round-because it DOES have a loaded round.

I like the interchangeability of the Glock components.

The reliability and accuracy out of the box is a premium to me.

I've fired a couple different Glock's and actually like the XD better. I'd talked to several friends and family members who've owned both and all of them said good things about both, but most recommended the XD over the Glock. My dad's recommendation goes a long way with me, as he's been a firearms enthusiast for pretty much all of his life, starting w/his time in the Marine Corps. I'm not all ate up about XD's like some of you folks are about Glock's, just like the XD better for my use - and that's my PERSONAL OPINION.

Ultimately, it came down to liking the price of the XD over the Glock, as well as liking the look of the XD over that of the Glock. So, I purchased the XD-40 SC without even firing it.

I could go on about how some fellas seem to feel the need to crow about their choice of the Glock over the XD to make up for certain... physical shortcomings... but won't.

Uh... You don't have a thing to worry about w/the XD firing upon a drop, either. That's why it's got the trigger safety - to prevent that sort of mis-fire from occuring. I've never heard of one being dropped and firing, tho admit I've not gone out of my way to seek out such stories.
