They're cheap guns that if money is more important than reliability are a great deal. I personally wouldn't trust one with my life. If you really don't want to spend a lot on a gun then I would suggest you just buy a used one. I've heard that they come with a "no questions asked" lifetime warranty but be prepared to be spending more time without it than with it.
I've also heard they're the most popular gun on the criminal market and that they've ignored signs of illegal activity when selling guns to buyers.

The criminal aspect is enough that my LGS won't carry them and if he does buy one used from someone he destroys it.

you've "heard"? your opinion means nothing as it is clearly not based on fact or experience.

unlike the mentioned individual, i do have experience with them. they are actually decent, just ugly. they go bang, fit the hand well, and actually have decent sights. they can be really accurate, if you do your part. starting off they do shoot a little high, but after about a 50 round break in, will shoot to point of aim. a friend and i had a friendly competition, and tied, i was shootin my ruger 357, at about 40 feet. then theres the warranty, no questions asked lifetime, even if you are a third party who bought it from a buddy. yes there are better guns, but none as low priced. they do tend to like ball ammo better, but on the off chance there is a fte, ftf, etc, it would be related to the mag, and is an easy adjustment.

My opinion is based on the fact that I've heard and read that they are pieces of *****.
You've never formed an opinion on something based on trusted sources and experiences from your friends?

Also look up the definition of opinion before you start critising others you ignorant panty waste.
    opinion |əˈpinyən|
    noun
a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge: I'm writing to voice my opinion on an issue of great importance | that, in my opinion, is dead right.
    • the beliefs or views of a large number or majority of people about a particular thing: the changing climate of opinion.
    • (opinion of) an estimation of the quality or worth of someone or something: I had a higher opinion of myself than I deserved.
    • a formal statement of advice by an expert on a professional matter: seeking a second opinion from a specialist.
    • Law a formal statement of reasons for a judgment given.
    • Law a lawyer's advice on the merits of a case.
    PHRASES
be of the opinion that believe or maintain that: economists are of the opinion that the economy could contract.
a matter of opinion something not capable of being proven either way.
ORIGIN Middle English: via Old French from Latin opinio(n-), from the stem of opinari ‘think, believe.’
So, OP, that's my opinion. Don't waste your money, just google "Hi-point" and watch the glowing reviews roll in or trust the opinion of someone who's unsure of what the word even means.

I have the 9mm. Had it for six years and it hasn't had a misfire yet. Good target pistol as it is quite accurate. It goes with on the boat, in the car, or at the night stand. Too large for concealed carry, it's a bit larger than my 45 subcompact.

Clearly you just proved my point. You are nothing more than an inexperienced interwebs commando. I wouldn't trust you with to babysit a dead parakeet. BTW, you completely discredited yourself by attempting to discredit my proper and educated use of the word opinion.

If it helps you sleep at night to think so go right ahead.

My brother has a 45. I have shot it many times with no issues. But it is BIG, HEAVY, & just plain
butt-ugly. Kind of fun to shoot as a novelty. But I wouldn't trust it in a self defense situation.
BG's love them because they're so cheap. Use them once & toss them in the river.

Materials, design, and quality control, these three things determine firearm quality. Some companies compromise on none, some compromise on all.

Hi-point does not rate well in any category.
