Three States Added to CCW Recognition in Nevada!

In a meeting of the Nevada Sheriff’s and Chief’s Association on Thursday, May 6, it was announced that three states (New Mexico, North Carolina, and Rhode Island) would be added to the list of states where carry permits would be recognized in Nevada.

These states now join Alaska, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia. The additions bring the number of state permits recognized to 13. Annually, the Nevada Department of Public Safety conducts a review of the permitting state’s policies regarding the issues on concealed carry permits and determines whether or not that state qualifies in accordance with the Nevada Revised Statutes.

Holders of valid permits from these states are allowed to carry a concealed weapon while in the state of Nevada. The permit must be in the possession at all times while carrying a firearm.

The Concealed Carry Permit Reciprocity Maps have been updated to reflect this.

  3. Rhode Island is listed as Shall Issue for both residents and nonresidents. This would provide a method ,now, for residents of states not accepted by NV to carry in NV. Does any one have experience in obtaining a nonres. RI permit?

No move to "fix" it, since no one in NV feels it's broken.

Under NV law [NRS 202.3689], the Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ Association decides which states NV will recognize.

    Nevada Revised Statue 202.3689
    1. On or before July 1 of each year, the Department shall:
    (a) Examine the requirements for the issuance of a permit to carry a concealed firearm in each state and determine whether the requirements of each state are substantially similar to or more stringent than the requirements set forth in NRS 202.3653 to 202.369, inclusive.
    (b) Determine whether each state has an electronic database which identifies each individual who possesses a valid permit to carry a concealed firearm issued by that state and which a law enforcement officer in this State may access at all times through a national law enforcement telecommunications system.
    (c) Prepare a list of states that meet the requirements of paragraphs (a) and (b). A state must not be included in the list unless the Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ Association agrees with the Department that the state should be included in the list.
    (d) Provide a copy of the list prepared pursuant to paragraph (c) to each law enforcement agency in this State.
    2. The Department shall, upon request, make the list prepared pursuant to subsection 1 available to the public.

RI is a state that needs to be fixed. Shall issue...but requires as "statement of need"....????

§ 11-47-11 License or permit to carry concealed pistol or revolver. – (a) The licensing authorities of
any city or town shall, upon application of any person twenty-one (21) years of age or over having a bona
fide residence or place of business within the city or town, or of any person twenty-one (21) years of
age or over having a bona fide residence within the United States and a license or permit to carry a
pistol or revolver concealed upon his or her person issued by the authorities of any other state or
subdivision of the United States, issue a license or permit to the person to carry concealed upon his or
her person a pistol or revolver everywhere within this state for four (4) years from date of issue, if it
appears that the applicant has good reason to fear an injury to his or her person or property or has any other
proper reason for carrying a pistol or revolver, and that he or she is a suitable person to be so licensed.

Unless stated, all changes go into effect July 1st.
NV law (NRS 202.3689) has a "on or before July 1st of each year" deadline time frame for the list of states honored by NV.
So, NV DPS uses July 1st as the date any changes goes into effect.

    For example...
When they removed FL & UT from the list, they decided it in 05-2009 and it went into effect on 07-01-2009.

Also, if you check the NV DPS website, the three new states have yet to be added to the list.
