Guardian Newspaper publishes state-by-state firearms law article

The UK Guardian newspaper has published some interactive news articles that summarize many aspects of each US state's firearms laws:

Gun laws in the US, state by state ? interactive | World news | guardian.co.uk

Gun laws in the US: seven things you need to know about the data | World news | guardian.co.uk

(Hover your mouse cursor over each segment of the pie-shaped "graph" to see more of the state-specific information. This is part of their interactive approach to web-based journalism.)

I thought the format and utility of these articles were good, but as usual YMMV - some may find it too complex to easily use. I was personally surprised how differently the fine details of the laws of each state treat guns, open carry, and concealed carry, as well as how variable the "stand your ground" laws are.

I'm sure this newspaper strongly supports the UK's absurd gun laws, but nevertheless I thought they were useful in describing the basics of the USA's many state gun laws. As with any news article, if the information is critical to your situation, you'll need to verify it carefully.

If people with a better background in gun laws see specific major errors in the articles, please comment.

I hope these news stories and links are helpful.

They got Washington wrong with regards to carry in establishments where alcohol is served. We are only prohibited from carry in taverns and bars, but restaurants that serve alcohol are OK as long as you stay out of the bar area.

Interesting. Noticed a law in regard to Iowa seems to conflict with what local law enforcement has told me... a couple in fact. While these sites can be useful, I really do not completely trust the accuracy. To be fair though, I really do not trust what local law enforcement tells me either. Best to research the law your self by reading the codes and or talking to instructors from your area. They have set me straight a couple times.

Due to the hostile, anti-gun environment we now live in, these laws are changing fast. Hate to see someone get popped for trusting 2 or 3 year old information.

I agree with your assessment on all but the instructors part. They don't always "know" the legalities in Gun Law. Been steered wrong a number of times. Best read it yourself and/or talk to an attorney. But I liked your post. YMMV

Fortunately for me, the instructors I would call upon for advice are directly involved in the legislation process here and I would actually trust them more than my own interpretation of the code. Having said that, you are indeed right. I should not assume that all instructors in general have the legalities down as we would like to think. Not everyone is as fortunate as I am in that respect.
