A Gonzales resident, Dr. Launcelot Smither, had been in Béxar on personal business. After discovering that Ugartechea had sent men to retrieve the cannon, Smither hurried to request that Ugartechea take no hostile action. Ugartechea asked Smither to convince the colonists to comply with Castañeda's orders and sent several soldiers to escort Smither back to Gonzales. When Smither arrived on October 1, Castañeda asked him to inform the Texians that the Mexican soldiers did not want conflict. Smither approached Captain Matthew Caldwell, known as "Old Paint", to explain that the soldiers meant no harm if the settlers would peacefully relinquish the cannon. Caldwell instructed Smither to return to the Mexican camp and the following morning bring Castañeda to the town to discuss the matter.

At roughly the same time, Moore called a war council. Despite the fact that the Mexican soldiers had made no move to take the cannon by force, the men voted to initiate a fight. They had ridden all the way to Gonzales and did not want to simply return home. Historians do not know whether the war council was aware that Caldwell had promised Castañeda safe passage to Gonzales the next morning. The men soon dug up the cannon and mounted it on cart wheels. They had no cannon balls, so gathered metal scraps to fill the cannon. James C. Neill, who had served in an artillery company during the War of 1812, was given command of the cannon. He gathered several men, including Almaron Dickinson, together to form the first artillery company of Texians. A local Methodist minister gave a sermon blessing their activities; the sermon made frequent reference to the American Revolution.

I will have to warn you though even though most of Texas is pretty conservative there are pockets of left wing socialists. Austin is especially bad. They do not have the motto "keep Austin weird" for nothing. Also there are way to may sickos in Dallas too for some reason as well as Lawyers. Perhaps that is because they are one and the same.

All Social Security needs is a significant, but not drastic, actuarial adjustment. The whole problem could be solved for 75 years with just a 15% cut in benefits or a small increase in the payroll tax. We could also impose a means test or raise the cap on the amount of wages the tax is applied to.

They have taken what many have put into it for years and distributed it to illegals , welfare bums and other none contributing members of society.
You should stop worrying about creeping socialism and work harder at becoming rich like me. Then, you wouldn't care about a few people getting some meager benefits they don't deserve.

HK, can you believe this guy? "...become rich like me". Yeah, I want to be just like Chuckie. I asked him before if he was 10 years old. Now, I'm thinking I'm insulting most 10 year olds that I know.

I agree. most 10 year olds would take exception with that comparison.

Or here's an idea... Keep your damn fingers out of my pocket and let me do it myself. There is nothing, NOTHING, that the government can do more cost effectively or with better results than the private sector.

So, there is a degree of capitalism in you. You've said yourself that you got rich by abusing the system. So, not only are you admittedly a swindling bastard, but you are also a hypocrite who decries crooked capitalism while engaging in exactly that.

But again, BACK TO THE TOPIC:YouTube - Gabriella Speaks City Council Meeting April 27, 2010This meeting took place a month ago. Today is the first time I heard about it, from a Baltimore local radio show. Where is the mainstream media?

Hey, UT, you gotta learn to stop holding stuff in, it's hard on the heart when you start to get older. Gotta let it out, brother.

Actually, of course, you were spot on.

We tried it that way. It didn't work.

Nope. You're wrong. There are many things the government can do better than the people can do in their separate and individual capacities.

So, there is a degree of capitalism in you.
Yep. I'm a big fan of the American Way, which is private ownership of the means of production, regulation of economic matters - as distinguished from laissez faire and a strong social safety net.

You've said yourself that you got rich by abusing the system.
That was just a little lawyer humor.

I was more into fabricating evidence and bribing witnesses.

You really shouldn't believe everything I say.

The only thing you've said since joining this site that I give credence to is in bold above.

Well, we can agree on that. I don't believe a damn thing you say. But seriously, if you want to argue capitalism vs. socialism, find an existing thread on that topic or start your own. This one is about the AZ immigration law and other states that are considering similar legislation.
