Bill Maher - "the Second Amendment is BS"

On the 4/12/13 edition of his HBO show, Bill, along with his usual, well-balanced guest panel, made the statement that the Second Amendment is b.s.

“Everyone on the left is so afraid to say what should be said,” Maher told his panel. “Which is, the Second Amendment is b***s***. Why doesn’t anyone go at the core of it?”
    Here is my response.

"THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution."
Context is everything. If you only look at the Second Amendment as a Constitutional amendment, then it is easy to overlook its importance. When you look at it in its context of the Bill of Rights, it becomes critically important. The Preamble to the Bill of Rights tells us that the STATES demanded the inclusion of the first ten amendments in order to limit the federal government and keep it under control, or, to use the words of Pres. Thomas Jefferson, to "bind him down with the chains of the Constitution." The Bill of Rights was passed with 2/3 majorities of both houses of Congress and by a 3/4 majority of the legislatures of the States.

    The Constitution is the chain.

The Bill of Rights is the lock that secures that chain.

The citizen militia is the armed guard that insures, under the authority of the Second Amendment, that the chain remains locked and secured. "I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials." — George Mason, in Debates in Virginia Convention on Ratification of the Constitution, Elliot, Vol. 3, June 16, 1788

The Second Amendment is b.s.? Better re-read your history, Maher. You wouldn't have the right to spout your uneducated garbage if it weren't for the Second Amendment protecting it.

  3. I'm sure there are some "Amendments" that Bill holds dear to his heart like "Freedom of speech". Lets screw with that and say idiots can't excercise their 1st Amendment rights! I think he would B*tch about that!!

Ah, Bill Maher, the A-Hole that a week after 9/11/01 said : "We (the U.S.) have been the cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That's cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it's not cowardly."

I like posts that display a deep and accurate understanding of the Constitution, but the fact is, Bill Maher is B.S.

Of course those who think they are better than anyone else and think they should be the masters of those lesser than themselves will say the 2nd Amendment is BS.... because they believe anything, anything at all.... that stands in the way of them finally assuming their proper status in life, that of being the elite in power over the lowly unimportant commoners, is BS.

    Quotes from Mao Tse Tung

150 Quotes from Mao Tse Tung

Every Communist must grasp the truth; “Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.”
“Problems of War and Strategy” (November 6, 1938), Selected Works, Vol. II, p. 224.

And if those lowly unimportant commoners have guns then the elite (and those who just think they are the elite but will be thrown under the bus as soon as they are no longer useful to the real elite) won't have enough political power to boss those lowly commoners around.

One of the best posts I've seen, followed by some of the best responses. Thanks for posting this, brother.

Not to get philosophical, but on an instinctual level, I think most men find this man repugnant because his words and his behavior reveal that he is devoid of male instinct, that magnificent component of all of us, which has guided mankind admirably through thousands of years of striving, exploration, war, self-sacrifice and defending those around us who cannot defend themselves. It is built in to our genetic makeup, hard-wired.
So when we run into a "man" like Maher, we are automatically repulsed.
No offense, Bill. But you are an undeserving member of the aforementioned group of "those who cannot defend themselves".

Kudos to both of these responses. I agree whole-heartedly.
