    Amending the Second Amendment?!

"With gun control in the news, Lyle Denniston looks at the argument that a new constitutional amendment would be the only way to satisfy groups on both sides of the issue.
    The statement at issue:

“Opinion polls suggest that a majority recognize a right to bear arms, subject to reasonable regulations protecting public safety. This strong dual commitment, if clarified and entrenched in our Constitution, could reassure most, though not all, of us. Before you mock the idea of a constitutional amendment, consider that hardly anyone is happy with our unstable status quo: gun enthusiasts fear their rights are under constant threat; gun control advocates point to the danger of illegal guns and easy access to firearms. … A new gun-rights amendment would need to articulate a basic consensus that would let both sides claim victory.”

Constitution Check: Does the Second Amendment need to be amended?
The Second Amendment has served us well for over 200 years. As long as there are criminals out there who refuse to put down their weapons, it is illogical - and outright idiotic - to require law abiding citizens to do so. You want to leave yourself defenseless, then you have the right not to own firearms and to hope that the police will arrive in time to save your butt.

    Leave it alone!

I'd have to become a criminal, you're not taking them from me.

The real issue being ignored is the pathetic education system in this country. Special interests have for too many years been aloud to control and direct government policies. They have dumbed down the education system, ripped apart our moral fabric and cheapened life itself.

Your words are true but I will add that the moral fabric is being torn apart because of political correctness as well. PC affects how teachers teach, preachers preach, parents parent, etc. Until we get back to the day and time where Christianity is not taboo, we will continue down the current path. I mention Christianity because that is the ONLY religion that is being squelched. Muslims, Buddists, atheists, etc. are not being attacked by the PC crowd...just Christians. Should make you wonder why if you don't already know!

It's not the education system. It's the bureaucratic maze you must navigate to get the proper information/procedure to move forward. Politicians put it that way to keep you from getting what you need.

OK. You blame it on the education system. Another poster blames it on the political system. The failures of both systems have one thing in common - the missing element that led to their failures is moral/ethical in nature. And that brings us back to the one organism that is trying so hard to be "relevant" and non-confrontational that it has lost its moral authority, the church. Churches have bought into the moral relativism that now characterizes our country. They champion causes and accept practices that the Bible will NEVER condone. Rather than standing for what is right, we now hear that we must go with the option that gets us the closest to our goal and hope for the best. The Bible is not a living document that changes with time; the Bible is a direct reflection of the changeless character of God, who said, "For I the Lord do not change...," Malachi 3:6, and whom the Apostle James characterized as the "Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change," James 1:17.

My point is, it's all tied together, the education system and special interests that direct government policies. These special interests are on both sides of the isle. Out of this comes the PC talk, the destruction of our moral fabric. This moral fabric must be destroyed so people will accept what ever agenda is pushed by these special interests as normal behavior. There's nothing wrong with the US Constitution. It's served us well over the years. The bible has also served us well for centuries. The trouble arises with the interpretation of what is written. Some can't accept that their interpretation isn't excepted. This would be the human factor.

I keep hearing this claim for the need to have "reasonable limitations" on our Second Amendment right to "protect the public." Does anyone have a line on a credible site that lists how many innocent bystanders are shot by a person acting in their own defense? The Kates study puts that figure at about 2% of all self defense shootings, while putting the figure for police accidentally shooting shooting someone who turned out to be innocent at 11%. So if the public need to be protected from being accidentally shot by someone, then we should be limiting police access to firearms.

We need to quit thinking that the 2nd Amendment is just about our defense against crime. It is our defense against so much more... it's our defense against a tyrannical government. Without the 2nd Amendment a rogue federal government takes over.
