    Becoming an AMERICAN...

Letter from former Pres. Teddy Roosevelt to the president of the American Defense Society, written on January 3, 1919. It was read aloud at a concert sponsored by the ADS on January 6, 1919; Roosevelt died three days later. It speaks to divisions among the American people, and what he believed to be the obligations of those who would become American citizens. Given the debate on giving illegals a special pathway to citizenship, it is appropriate.

"I cannot be with you and so all I can do is to wish you God speed. There must be no sagging back in the fight for Americanism merely because the war is over.

There are plenty of persons who have already made the assertion that they believe the American people have a short memory and that they intend to revive all the foreign associations which more directly interfere with the complete Americanization of our people. Our principle in this matter should be absolutely simple.

In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here does in good faith become an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace or origin. But this is predicated upon the manís becoming in very fact an American and nothing but an American.

If he tries to keep segregated with men of his own origin and separated from the rest of America, then he isn't doing his part as an American.

There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American but something else also, isnít an American at all.

We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile. We have room for but one language here and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, and American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding house; and we have room for but one soul loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people."

Roosevelt's letter, if followed religiously through succeeding generations, would have precluded the situation we have today of a bastardized country. His outline was so simple that it went right over the heads of those responsible for developing our nation. We have a segregated nation, as evidenced by Islamic communities in Michigan, Hispanic communities in larger cities, south Florida with Cubans and Haitians, on and on. We no longer have a common language. Multi-lingual signs all over the place, not simply English. Foreign flags being displayed rather than our flag around the country. We are losing our national identity and are no longer a "melting pot" as we once were. Being a melting pot of peoples made us a great country at one time and not fragmented as today. Being an American will soon be a thing of the past. Islam is a fast growing movement here and, in areas with the largest numbers of Muslims, will soon be able to elect only Muslim officials to governmental positions and open the doors for Sharia law. A good example of how that is happening is the number of Muslims Obama has put into positions in the national government. It is happening to us every day and people are blind to the effects it will have. I really wonder what it would take to awaken the country?

Ezekiel, I think it needed to be larger. Okay?

    Great post.

I think about the old-timers like my maternal grandfather who came from Sicily with a few dollars and a pack of cigarettes in his pocket. They came to America seeking a better future. At Ellis Island they waited in long lines and were sometimes quarantined due to disease. Although they settled in neighborhoods with common ancestry for social and economic reasons, most learned the language and assimilated into society. They knew hardship and they knew poverty. But they did something about it. They learned a trade, worked hard, paid taxes and built a better future for their kids. And some of the happiest people in the world came home every night filthy from a hard day. But that was OK. They were free and they were prospering. When we think back to a better time where people had respect for the American way and talk about religious or family values we're labeled by the liberals as "dangerous." They attack those who believe in the traditional values that shaped society, such as religion. Then the IRS targets our conservative non-profit organizations to be audited as part of a much bigger agenda to make traditional America a distant memory. And the President, who must be above all this, lies about knowing anything. It's a sad state we live in when the president of the United Sates continually lies about his involvement in or knowledge of these scandalous acts.

The illegal "have-nots" are raiding the hard work of those families who came here and worked to build wealth and a future. Those who followed the rules. The great emigration of the turn of the century. In retrospect it's quite ironic. Margaret Thatcher said it best when she stated the problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of others people money. People around the world see America as somewhere they can go, illegally, and get everything free. Yet those who came before them saw America as somewhere they could go to seek their own fortune through hard work. We're on-track to be a "turd"-world country.

I look at the kids in our family and wonder what kind of world it will be when they're 50-yrs-old. Will they go gently into this good night or will they have the strength to resurrect the ideals that made both people and this country great? From our grandfathers to our kids, in just three short generations, America as we knew her since her founding principals were established is gone forever.
