Grand Haven, MI, in the news again....

Grand Haven, MI, made the news a few years ago when they, in violation of MI state law, briefly arrested a veteran for legally, openly carrying his firearm. It took a little while longer for him to get his firearm back from GH police, but it did finally happen.

MI is an OC state with pre-emption laws.

Grand Haven is in the news again today. A group of OC gun owners had planned a small parade in favor of Second Amendment rights during the Coast Guard Festival, which is in full-swing right now, to educate the public. They made a request of the city for the parade, which was denied in place of a small demonstration in font of city hall. The organizer agreed to the change. The GH public safety director made the following remarks:

“I was concerned because not everyone understands the open-carry concept or the open-carry discussion which is a big issue in Michigan right now,” he said. “I was also concerned that because of the amount of people downtown for the festival, it would create stress on some families who may not understand the laws.

Hawke added that another reason for requesting the demonstration remain at city hall was to avoid putting a burden on 911 operators who may have been flooded with calls in a time when they need those circuits open for other emergencies.

If the group had ignored the requests of law enforcement, the march would have had to have been allowed, but Hawke said a police escort would have been provided.
There's that word again, the same word used by our illustrious, misinformed USAG to describe our RIGHT to self-defense - concept. OC is a RIGHT, not a "concept."

Obviously, doing this under police escort would send all the wrong messages, but it brings us back to the central thought, educating "some families who may not understand the laws," which would have been the whole point of the small parade. As long as the public remain unaware of MI laws regarding firearms carry, or worse, misinformed because of the constant lies fed them by the MSM and gun control groups, they will remain in fear of those of us who carry.

I just faxed the following letter to Grand Haven Public Safety Director Jeffery Hawke:

    Mr. Jeffery Hawke
    Director, Grand Haven Public Safety

    Mr. Hawke,

I respectfully disagree with your characterization of open carry in the recent Mlive report as a "concept."

Under Michigan law, open carry is a RIGHT, not a "concept." Michigan law protects open carry of legally owned firearms, and has since our founding. Even when Michigan gun control laws first went into effect in the early 1900's, they specifically left our RIGHT to openly carry alone, addressing concealed carry only because it was felt that concealed carry would give the person carrying concealed an unfair advantage over another person during a fight (yes, they believed in the concept [note that this word is used correctly here] of a "fair fight").

While I do not, personally, choose to openly carry a firearm, I nonetheless stand firmly behind the legal rights of those who do, and I am tired of the constant stream of misinformation that seeks to marginalize our right to carry guaranteed by both the US and Michigan Constitutions. BOTH Constitutions state unequivocally that our right to carry shall not be infringed (Second Amendment, US Constitution, Article 1 Sections 2 and 6, Michigan Constitution); NEITHER Constitution places any limitations on the method of carry. It is precisely because of such misleading characterizations by public officials that the public remains uninformed regarding our right to carry - and panicked when they see someone exercising that right.

I spend quite a bit of time in Grand Haven with my family, and it concerns me greatly to hear public officials propagating such misconceptions.

The part of your post I put in bold is the agenda... the portion of your post I put in underline is....... the goal. But the true goal is for the common man to fear those who carry guns when no one but the government (and it's representatives) have guns.
