Thread: 2017 social security cola increase

  1. How can anyone call S.S. an entitlement ? You were forced by law to pay into it and so was your employer at equal rates depending on your pay scale.
With an entitlement , you have a option to take part or not,

    What entitlement would that be?

Are we running out of arguments again?

  6. Any entitlement the government offers , it is your option to take part in it.
No law requires you to do it.

Again, what entitlement would that be? Be specific.

Medicaide , SSI,Food Stamps, Section 8, free phones are a few entitlements and they are only a drop in the bucket.

All paid for with taxes. You are forced by law to pay into them as you are forced by law to pay into Social Security. It is not optional.

Is someone eligible to receive these benefits without paying for them at all, sure, because it is wealth re-distribution. Someone else's taxes pay for these entitlements in this case. Is someone eligible to receive Social Security without paying something for it. No. However, someone else's taxes still pay for this entitlement as well.

That still doesn't mean that Social Security isn't an entitlement program. It just means not everyone is eligible for it, just like everyone is not eligible for receiving food stamps, SSI, Medicaid and Section 8 housing. There are income limits and a significant portion of the US population is not eligible for these benefits, but is required to pay for them.

Also, if you qualify something as an entitlement program that is purely paying out benefits to people that didn't pay for them, then there is no such thing as an entitlement program. Any current recipient may have been required by law to pay into them in the past and may be required to pay into them by law in the future.

The difference is, if you do not pay into S/S or don't pay in enough, you can not collect when you hit the age limit. But you can collect food stamps, housing, and education even if you never lived here before, of paid into anything.

  11. The people getting these entitlements are not required by law to receive them and can decide not to.
