    2017 social security cola increase

There will be a slight COLA increase in Social Security for 2017. But don't get excited. There will also be a Medicare increase in premium that will take most of it. That's the Federal Government, give it to you with one hand, take it away with the other.
I know a lot of us on this forum are retired and get S/S, but let's not forget, we paid the money in our whole life. Then the Government under Democrat President Lyndon Johnson took it and put it into the General Fund so they could spend it on Liberal Projects. They just could not stand seeing all those billions of dollars sitting around in Social Security not being used, or at least for things they want to use it for. Liberals never saw a dollar (of someone else's) that they couldn't find a way to spend. After all they think they can run our lives better that we can do it our selves. In fortunately they have never accomplished it. Remember, the Government has no way of earning an income. Everything they spend come out of your pockets. They've never earned a dime, ever. Take, take, take.

So LBJ put it into the general pot to be spent on all those other liberal causes. Remind me, how many Republican Presidents went and changed that so that SS would be safe? Was it Mr. Nixon? NOPE! Mr. Ford? NOPE! Mr. Reagan NOPE! (oh, and he wrote a bunch of phony IOUs so he could build a bunch of tanks and stuff) Bush I? NOPE! Bush II? NOPE! So tell me again how the great conservative philosophy has helped the working man?

Yes, there are solutions. Quit giving Social Security money to every immigrant who comes into the country, quit funding the populace that finds it more lucrative to not work and draw from the government teat. That is only two suggestions and, if you will stop and think, there are many more cuts that could be made in spending. But that would require common sense, a very scarce commodity in Washington.

Do you know how Social Security works (or doesn't)? Like every entitlement, it is a Ponzi scheme. It is broken by design.

Note that you have to work for at least 10 years to receive minimum Social Security benefits. The more you work and the more income you have, the more benefits you get.

Many immigrants pay way more into Social Security than you, unless you have a PhD and work in Silicon Valley.

Social Security is not and "entitlement". An entitlement is something you don't pay into and get for free like food stamps. Americans have been required to pay into Social Security their entire working life. There are people getting paid your money that did not contribute a dime, yet get as much if not more a month than the people that paid in are getting. This is a crime and fraud.

Social Security is an entitlement program. Just because it isn't free doesn't mean it isn't an entitlement program. You are entitled to benefits that you claim you have earned by paying very little for it. Those paying into the system today pay your benefits, because you are entitled to receive them and not because you actually earned them by paying for them. That's why I said, it is a Ponzi scheme, broken by design.

I understand where you are getting confused here, because Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid technically shouldn't be entitlement programs. However, they have been corrupted to be entitlement programs as they contain, by design, wealth distribution from current payers to current earners.

Please show me an example of people getting paid my money that did not contribute a dime!

Since the very first disbursement from the "lock-box" of SSI, money paid to recipients (read: retirees) was collected from current earners. The money taken from our generation's paychecks was never "ours," it was the money of already-retired or disabled recipients. Under the ponzi scheme system, the only money we are entitled to call "ours" is that money which is deducted from the next generation's earnings. It's much more theirs than "ours."

It definitely is an entitlement program, and it's based on the lie that you get back what you put in. That certainly won't be true for whichever generation is holding the ball when the program goes tits up. They will get nothing, and neither will the "lock-box" that is filled with nothing but IOU's because it's been being purloined by the thieves and embezzlers of government since shortly after the ink was dry in 19xx-whatever when FDR signed it into law.

A potentially bigger problem than SS is going to be Medicare, which is tied to the issue of skyrocketing U.S. health-care costs. It seems to me that Social Security and Medicare are also an example of redistribution, from younger taxpayers to the retirees
