Exclamation Report: Arizona Rep. considering lawsuit against Obama over birth certificate

Report: Arizona Rep. considering birther lawsuit
Report: Arizona Rep. considering birther lawsuit - Glenn Thrush - POLITICO.com
Taking the birther thing to a new level, archconservative Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) is considering filing a lawsuit to put President Obama on the spot over his birth documents, according to a Mohave Daily News readout of a Franks town hall over the weekend.

Oh, yeah, and Franks apparently didn't object when an audience member suggested Obama "denounced" the U.S. as a Christian nation during an overseas trip, which never happened.

    MDN's Jim Seckler:

The other main issue dealt with numerous speakers questioning Obama's birth certificate and why there wasn't an investigation into whether he is a naturalized citizen. One woman said a newspaper announcement of his birth in Hawaii was not sufficient. Another asked how he could have a passport without a birth certificate.

Franks said there was not enough evidence that Obama is not an American citizen. He did say there was a lot of conflicting evidence of Obama's citizenship and that he was considering filing a lawsuit, the only congressman to do so. Franks asked why the president did not simply produce a birth certificate.

One speaker, a pre-school teacher, tearfully said Obama denounced the country as a Christian nation and warned he should learn a civics lesson. Franks agreed with her saying he was offended that Obama denigrated the country on an overseas trip and the president should speak in favor of the country when abroad.

Context: Franks, is a global warming skeptic, pal of Focus on the Family founder James Dobson and served as a high-ranking aide to former Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham, who was removed from office and canceled the state's Martin Luther King Jr. holiday while Franks was on the payroll.

A similar suit has already been dismissed by the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Exclamation more fuel for the fire

    Congressman critical of Obama's policies
    Mohave Daily News: Top Story
    By JIM SECKLER/The Daily News

KINGMAN - A big, boisterous crowd largely supported an Arizona Congressman, who lambasted the Democratic president and his policies.

Rep. Trent Franks, a Republican representing Arizona's 2nd Congressional District that includes Mohave County, held a town hall meeting Saturday afternoon at a jammed-packed Kingman church.

Franks started the town hall off by showing a half-hour video on the country's missile defense system. The movie warned of threats of a missile attack by rogue nations such as North Korea and Iran and the need to protect the country with a missile defense shield.

Franks then criticized President Barack Obama on every issue starting with the president's lack of understanding of the threat by terrorists to launch an attack against the United States. The conservative Republican also said he voted against the federal stimulus bill and the Cash for Clunkers program, which he said benefited foreign car makers. He also said it would take 34,000 years to pay off the debt that Obama is accruing.

District 2 Sup. Tom Sockwell, along with state Reps. Nancy McLain and Doris Goodale and state Sen. Ron Gould, attended the meeting. The Bullhead City supervisor said he thought the town hall went smoothly but thought that Franks should be more vocal in stating his opinions back in Washington, D.C.

Franks opened the town hall with questions written on cards and from some of the 950 people who crammed into the church. So many people attended, several meeting rooms at the church were used as an overflow.

Two of the questions that many people asked were about the health care reform that President Obama and Democrat leaders are trying to pass through Congress and whether Obama is a naturalized American citizen.

Franks held up the latest House bill up showing the thickness of the legislation concerning health care reform. He also said the latest figures show that the health care reform bill would cost $1.6 trillion.

“If the government takes over something and it saves money, that would be the first time that happens,” Franks said.

Under Obama's health care plan, seniors would get the worst of it and the plan would “blow a hole in freedom,” he said.

When asked if the Republicans have a plan, Franks said Republicans have three bills pending, including limiting attorneys from suing doctors and other tort reform.

One speaker asked how the Congressman would cover those who did not have insurance. Another asked if the bill would require doctors and hospitals to perform abortions. Franks said he opposes abortion and federal funding for it.

Franks said he was for covering everyone but he supports empowering the private insurance system, which would allow the most freedom and choice. He criticized England's health care system by saying, “If you have a cold, call a doctor; but if you have diabetes or cancer, call a travel agency.”

Another speaker asked why you can't buy health insurance like you buy car insurance. Franks agreed that one's employer doesn't buy car insurance so why do they provide medical insurance?

When asked about Medicare already being in place and the possible expansion of that federal program to cover everyone with it, Franks said the program was going broke and the plan has some private companies involved.

One speaker criticized Franks for working for the health care industry and keeping the status quo and criticized former President George Bush for bankrupting the country. His lone voice was drowned out by a chorus of boos.

The Republican congressman defended Bush by saying he may not support the former president on every issue but at least Bush kept the country safe and promised that Americans will wish Bush was back as president.

In answering another question about homeless veterans, Franks said he is committed to helping veterans.

Another hot topic was immigration with several speakers demanding that the millions of illegal immigrants be sent back to Mexico. Illegal immigration was also the cause for the state's large deficit, one man said.

Franks said he is committed to national security and supported a fence, which was signed into law by Bush, along the country's border with Mexico. He warned of the ease of bring a nuclear weapon across the border that could wipe out the population on Kingman four times over.

Franks also called Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now fraudulent and said it should be investigated by the U.S. Attorney General. He also said the organization was committed to hurting the country and blamed the organization
