Frightening results of Constitution Day survey indicate vast majority of students have little understanding of political system

“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.”
    -Thomas Jefferson

A Constitution Day survey commissioned by the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs (OCPA) has found that the vast majority of high school students do not know that the Constitution represents the supreme law of the United States.

When asked the question What is the supreme law of the land? only 28% of public high school students in Oklahoma answered correctly.

In addition, over 75% were unable to identify the first president of the United States as George Washington, with 10% believing it was either George W. Bush or Barack Obama.

Around 75% were also unable to identify the name of the first ten amendments to the Constitution, with small percentages answer “The New Deal” and “The Ten Commandments”.

Alarmingly, just 14% were able to correctly state that the author of the Declaration of Independence was Thomas Jefferson. While 34% said they didn’t know, 7% thought that Barack Obama wrote it and 2% frighteningly believed that it had been drawn up by Michael Jackson.

11% of the students thought that the two major political parties in the U.S. were the Republicans and the Communists.

The questions, posed by national research firm, Strategic Vision, are taken from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services exam, the test that all candidates to become U.S. citizens must take.

As noted by the OCPA in their write up of the survey results, while around 92% of the people who take the citizenship test pass on their first attempt, only 2.8% of the students surveyed would have passed the citizenship test.

The results of the survey are displayed below, for further breakdown see the write up:
    Question Answer % of Students
    Who Answered Correctly
What is the supreme law of the land? The Constitution 28
What do we call the first ten amendments to the Constitution? The Bill of Rights 26
What are the two parts of the U.S. Congress? The House and the Senate 27
How many justices are there on the Supreme Court? Nine 10
Who wrote the Declaration of Independence? Thomas Jefferson 14
What ocean is on the east coast of the United States? Atlantic 61
What are the two major political parities in the United States? Democratic and Republican 43
We elect a U.S. senator for how many years? Six 11
Who was the first President of the United States? George Washington 23
Who is in charge of the executive branch? The President 29

Out of 1000 students surveyed, only 6 of them got more than 7 questions correct, and only 108 got more than half of the questions correct.

“In short, Oklahoma’s public high-school students have displayed a profound level of ignorance regarding American history, government, and geography.” the OCPA concludes.

The OCPA also notes that when the same survey was done recently in Arizona, a similar figure, only 3.5%, of Arizona’s high-school students passed the citizenship test.

A typical of the entire nation. This kind of rampant ignorance is not limited to OK or AZ. Our great public education system with its dumbing down of the masses produces illiterate sheeple that will vote in a wanna be dictator. Perhaps a test to see if a voter has at least a basic understand of the Constitution and the principles of how and why our country was founded should be conducted before allowing them to vote.

You gotta take into consideration how many high school kids that are just uninterested in taking that survey. Nobody can honestly believe that Michael Jackson wrote the Declaration. That is just kids being goofy, or lazy, or whatever. But I wouldn't doubt if these numbers were a somewhat accurate representation of American kids.

Public schools don't teach kids about the importance of our Constitution, or American History, or Presidents. I didn't even know what the War of 1812 was until I was out of high school, and I wasn't a dumb kid. But I sure knew all about the female reproductive system by 4th grade.

In the early 80's while the cold war was still going on, 25% of HS students put Russia where Canada is geographically.. We've been dumb asses for a while...
Whenever "Jay-walking" (A Jay Leno thing) would come on, I'd have my daughter come out of her room and I would pause the TV after each question and ask her to answer the question.. She would get about 90% of them correctly.. (She was 16/17 at the time).. She is not overly interested in politics, or the news, so.. I would say that's pretty good..

  7. All the schools are interested in is getting the kids to pass that dang test at the end of the year. Lets teach the test, are kids will pass and the school looks good and we get money from the gov. I know I work for the schools. It just gets my goat. The kids don't have a clue. SAD VERY SAD!

I think you're a little wrong here, Cooter. I have seen kids on the street asked questions like this, and the answers were awful. Kids today are not taught American history, at least all the way back to the Pilgrims and the American Revolution. THye know nothing later than the Civil War, and even that has been white-washed.

Kids ARE taught, however, how to use condoms and birth control pills (have 'safe sex'), homosexuality, and how to feel good about themselves. They don't fail in school because that would hurt their little psyches. So they get "promoted" through school, and even though the're brain-dead, colleges accept them, where they get even heavier indoctrination on socialism.

And that's why so many young people voted for Obama. Because it was "cool", he was a "nice guy , and/or he was black. They had no idea where our country was going, but it was going to be a fun ride. And that's the truth, because I have two grown daughters who are drunk on Obama's Kool-Aid. And in their eyes (Obama's thugs have done a good job), any opposition to Obama is "racist." I can't even bring up a viable argument, with facts and figures, without them cutting me off and telling me that I am a racist, that anyone who doesn't think Obama is doing a reat job wants to destroy him because he is black.

Only 11% knew the two major political parties were the Republicans and the Communists? Something needs to be done about the education process in the country.

How very sad indeed. Nevertheless, I'm not quite sure that "enlightening" the kids would have kept them from voting for Obama. The news media is predominantly Democratic, and that is the case regardless of how much civics education children have. Furthermore, a person's level of education doesn't have as much impact on their poltical ideology as their surroundings and environment do.
Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.

And their level of maturity. Independence comes with maturity. Liberals encourage dependence.
