Crackdown in Burma: It couldn't happen here, Yet.

So, another popular and spontaneous democratic uprising is crushed by the fascists in power. How is it possible that such an overwhelming majority can be ignored by the government?

"The people are enraged, but they could not do anything because they're facing guns," said a 68-year-old teacher. "I think the protests are over because there is no hope pressing them."

Governments that disarm the populace can rule with impunity and crush popular dissent. Let's stop the HR 1022 assault weapons ban before it becomes law. I never want to see something like this happen my my country.

First they will have to remove the guns from the people, such as Canada, UK,
and others. Then they can put down the freedom movement.

I have to agree with Ray. Once (hopefully never) they can take our means of protecing ourselves away, they will do whatever they want.

Anyone that doesn't think it could happen here is kidding themselves. I'm sure they didn't think it would happen in Australia.

Careful teading here on this one

Extreme Left.......................................<Moderate>.........................................Extreme Right
Communist................. Socialist................................. Nationalist/Conservative............. Facist

This appears more on a line but the in actuality should arc towards a circle and where they meet you wil find National Socialist's or Nazi's

doublenutz, I see your point, maybe the military junta in Burma isn't fascist in the strictest political sense. Maybe 'totalitarian' was the correct word here.

fascism

How is fascism considered "extreme right?" One necessary part of fascism is the confiscation of arms of the people. That seems very leftist to me.

Well, fascism usually entails extreme versions of right-wing ideology, such as xenophobia, militarism and the trampling of civil rights. The communists' first enemy was fascism, and vice versa. Remember hitler burning the reichstag and blaming it on the communists? Also the spanish civil war was between socialists and the fascists.

Ultimately, pat phrases like 'right-wing' and 'left-wing' aren't sufficient to contain the spectrum of politcal thought that have been ascribed to them throughout history. The idea that Hillary Clinton is a socialist is endlessly amusing to the Green party, for example, who consider her a die-hard Capitalist (which she is, as are all mainstream American political candidates).

I got my political education elsewhere, but the effect is the same. Great to find scholars of history and political science on the gun boards. (tips hat to doublenutz)

I am afraid most of our founding fathers would be considered extreme right wing today. I guess that is why I just like the term patriot.

You know, I really don't see the bill of rights as being either right or left wing. The best folks on both sides have stepped up to defend the bill of rights when it matters. Also, the worst folks on both sides have conspired to subvert it. Right now Washington is full of these. They can't agree on what parts of the constitution to throw into the shredder first, but they're all criminals to me.

Right or Left, folks who defend the constitution are real Americans. Because the Bill of Rights is really what defines our national character.

OK, so all of us enthusiasts are hard over on the 2nd amendment. But what are we really doing about it. I started writing my Senator/Congressmen continuously and my state legislature also. Anybody else?

It's already happened here...have we forgotten New Orleans so quickly? Most of those folks still haven't had their guns returned to them.

Also, it's happened nationwide in a sense. The COTUS says that the right to keep and bear (own and CARRY) arms shall not be infringed. It seems to me that many people have forgotten or never knew what the word "Infringe" means.

It means "to CUT INTO at the EDGE"...in other words, ANY CONTROL or restriction. Our rights have already been infringed, unconstitutionally, by requiring "permits" or "licenses" to carry a handgun in most states. For having to pay a "fee" for our right to carry. Or by limiting the number of rounds a magazine can hold, or how fast the gun can fire. Some states are worse than others, of course.

A right that must be bought is no right at all!! We are all excited when our state goes "Shall Issue"...but the Constitution says all states should have always been shall issue. And really, there should be nothing to issue...no license, permit, etc. Just get your gun and carry it.

And now we have to pay a fee for it, and we are happy. We accept the limitations and restrictions the government puts on us and think, "My, we are really moving forward with gun rights." It's pitiful that we can't see how far down in the hole we really are.

Sure, I know other countries are even worse, but they weren't founded on the principles our country was founded on.

And it has nothing to do with no stinking MILITIA! The Militia was NOT the military and certainly NOT the National Guard. It was plain old citizens, who OWNED THEIR OWN GUNS, who banded together to protect their own community...not the nation, not the state (in most cases), just their own town or county.

In time of war, they did work closely with the military, but they were not military themselves, and were not issued their weapons...they brought them from HOME!

Ok...I'm done...for now. How do I look? My tie straight? Is my face red? I'm going to step down now....

I just figured I'd let people know where I stand from the start...

Problem is most Americans think our rights come from the government. Our rights do not come from government. They do not even come from the constitution. Where did our founding fathers say they came from. "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights....." Our founding faters knew our rights come from God. Oh sorry I forgot we are not supposed to recognize God in this country anymore.

Exactly right! I didn't mean to imply that the COTUS granted us anything...it merely enumerates our rights, rights we already had.
