Top 8 New Year’s Resolutions for Gun Owners

Like many people, I sit down at the beginning of the year and make resolutions and goals for the year ahead. I thought I’d share with you a few resolutions/goals that every gun owner may want to consider for 2013.

1. Go to the shooting range more. I realize we all have busy schedules, but pick a specific time and day you’ll go to the range and put it on your calendar. For instance, if you’re going to go once a month then go on the third Tuesday of each month at 10am. If you can go weekly, then go every Friday at 6pm. It doesn’t matter who you are, all of us can use more practice.

2. Invite someone to go to the range with you. Maybe you have a liberal friend who doesn’t like guns, or perhaps someone who’s interested in guns but still scared of them. I have found no better way to show someone how enjoyable shooting is than by inviting them to the range, which often creates a life long shooter.

3. Go to at least one training class this year. My friend Massad Ayoob likes to say that instead of spending money on multiple guns, why not use some of that money for training instead. So this year make it your goal to attend at least one pistol or rifle or shotgun class. Plan ahead and schedule that class soon that way you actually make the time to attend it.

4. Find the right gear for you. If you have a gun that you don’t carry around often because you find it uncomfortable, then take the time to find the right one for you this year. Luckily, this is easy to do by going to the range, renting a bunch of guns and finding the one you like best. In addition to getting the right gun, take the time to find the right holster too.

5. Dry fire more. If you’re not happy with your draw stroke, or trigger press then spend a few minutes each week safely dry firing. I spend about 10-15 minutes each day dry firing and the secret to sticking to this is to dry fire at the exact same time each day. (Just remember to have a safe backstop, such as the bulletproof panel that I’ve tacked up on my own wall.)

6. Think more. Most people don’t think at all these days and simply go through their daily motions like drones. So what should you think about? Well, obviously, I’m biased to thinking about safety. For instance, think about your home security. Is there anything you know you should do to make your home more “intruder proof?” Also, think while you’re going about your daily routine. If you go to the same coffee shop each morning and sit in the same place, how would you react if one day someone suddenly stormed in and started shooting? And think more about gun safety in general. Are all of your guns locked up in your house in quick-access safes? And when you clean your guns do you do it in a room where no live ammunition is present? Think, think, think.

7. Join the NRA or renew your membership. I recently saw a statistic that said there are 100 million Americans who own guns, yet only 4 million members of the NRA. The truth is, I don’t always agree with everything the NRA does, but they are the 800-pound gorilla and they are fighting for our 2nd Amendment rights. That’s why I’m happy to be a member and to contribute my dues to them each year. So for 2013, please join or renew your NRA membership.

8. Figure out a way to convince your spouse that you need more guns and that they’re more important than shoes, clothes, and all of those baby items that I know my baby doesn’t need. Case in point: Why does my kid need 15 different pairs of shoes to match her every outfit? She can’t even walk and they pretty much fall off every time we go out and then when I lose the one shoe we have to buy another pair that she will outgrow in about 2.5 seconds. (I have a feeling #8 will be a New Year’s resolution I will be working on for life.)

I hope you have a wonderful New Year and that 2013 is safe and full of prosperity for you.

I actually have “Win 3-Gun Competition” as one of mine. Because to do that I will do go to the range more, ensure I have good equipment, etc. Wish me l luck!

Right or wrong, I always agree and never equivocate when it comes to the NRA. Its mandatory. That’s because none of us would have guns if we had to face the likes of irrational, unreasonable Feinstein, Bloomberg, the States of MA, NJ, NY, CA, IL, HI and a few others, who always disagree with the NRA, on our own.

highest crime states in the country you just listed, also… Maybe not so much MA, but there is always an exception to any rule. DC should be there too. There are the most crime riddled state in the country so I read.

I live in the suburbs of Atlanta, not far from Kennesaw where they passed a law in the 80’s after Morton Grove Illinois banned handguns. The Kennesaw law required gun ownership for all heads of households. They left loopholes for those who really don’t like guns but they are protected by the image of the city as a bad place for bad people to go. They have maintained a very low violent crime rate and I understand Morton Grove has maintained the high violent crime rate that they thought banning guns would help.

I keep thinking that one of these days they will start passing laws that could actually reduce gun crime such as an automatic additional sentence whenever the perpetrators have a gun. An automatic life sentence seems the right place to start, with at least 20 years before any parole and always consecutive rather than concurrent with the original sentence for the actual crime committed.

Join your State grassroots organization. They move much more quickly than the NRA on local and National issues and are more likely to be “no compromise”.

and what are you trying to say Adelbert? Maybe you should post somewhere else, you must be a Liberal……

Adelbert Waldron

It means his articles are pointless and for the most part just self promotion pieces. Instead of being helpful, meaningful or insightful many times they offer information that is completely wrong and idiotic.

My resolution is to stop the gun grabbers by any and all means possible. Especially by writing and calling my congressmen and senators so much that they will cringe when they hear my name

Until you add something about making the Lord more important in your life and start consulting here more in all our decisions, the rest of this is unimportant. This life is short and eternity is a long time. While security in this life is definitely important, it pales when compared to security for eternity. I own guns and have for almost all of my adult life. I have a carry permit and often do carry even while at home but I’m not paranoid about it. My security is in the Lord’s hands and I simply try and help out as best I can. I have a business to run and the Lord’s work to do and all the rest will be fit in as long as it doesn’t interfere with my duties to God, family and country in that order.

Jason Hanson stated for goal #1: “For instance, if you’re going to go once a month then go on the third Tuesday of each month at 10am.”
How many people can go on the third Tuesday at 10am of “any” month. Most of them are employed and I doubt that any employers would agree that one of their employees needs to take off once a month “during work hours” to head to the firing range. A weekend day would be far more reasonable as a suggestion. That is the only time my shooting club can get together.

Les Moor

If the range is close enough to work, go at lunch.

I would also suggest, for a NYR is to look at NGRA, and others, who are putting out petitions, pledges, etc, to tell Obama AND Feistien to BACK OFF from the gun grab!

The US is one of the few countries that has not signed on to the UN “Small Arm Treaty,” which Hillary has been trying to work on since before the CO shooting, which has constantly been argued against, because it violates the 2nd. Now, with Sandy Hook, you have a zillions fools calling the repeal of The 2nd, or making it so only the government can carry.

I urge everyone to contact their reps, to reaffirm The 2nd, and general right to bear. I also encourage you to contact The White House/Obama, and tell him that we already have *enough* gun regs, and to contact Feinstein, and tell her that her “assault ban” NEEDS to be altered: no targeting handguns, magazines that carry over 10 rounds, etc.

You may also want to include, when talking to the reps, that if Obama’s kids can have armed security for them at school, if teachers at your school have permits, to be able to carry, as Obama’s kids are NOT more precious to us than our own! Let him give up ALL his security details, before he denies us ours.

Other notes, which you may do with as you decide: The US government was selling guns to Mexican drug cartels, resulting in the death of US border agents, Fast and Furious. Drones, with *missiles,* have killed more *innocent* people, including kids, than guns have…and our governments want to have 30,000 in US skies by 2020…Obama has “kill lists,” to say who lives and dies. When a US boy was killed, it was “because his dad was a bad man.”

Final fun fact: from VA Tech to Colubine, 90% of these shooters have been on Prozac, Ritalin, and other “brain altering ‘legal’ drugs.” Celebrex, for arthritis pain, can cause heart attacks and death. What do you think brain altering drugs will do?

John A. Scheidt

One that was left out is to look at the reciprocal map and
apply for as many CCW permits that your budget allows, it will cover you in all the
states that you travel through or to, when your in Florida, take a class and
get certified, same with WI, AZ and TX some states will do it all through the mail with
proof that you have a CCW, training cert. and a cashier’s check in hand along with the finger print card, make sure that the police department uses old school inking and have the officer sign & date with the departments address & phone #.

John A. Scheidt

Also, if your budget allows, stockup on as much ammo as you possible can. not only is the goverment trying to grab the guns, but there is a deversion going on, on who is buying up the ammo manufactures. I’ll barter 5 rounds of 45 acp for steak and eggs. If you have more than one or 4 pistals make sure they are they same Cal. standard ammo 9mm, 38 380 acp, 45 acp and for your long guns stick to the NATO 223, 308 and 30 cal AND SAVE YOUR BRASS
I just check CTD, The Sportsman, and the Ammory and all the quality stuff is on back order and they don’t have a clue as to when they will get it in, let alone that every quality pistal is out of stock.
I looked at Wally World the other day and all the had was 4 boxes of lead tipped 22LR left on the shelf.
