As the debate about gun control goes back and forth in our nation, it sometimes seems like the anti-gun crowd has the upper hand. They speak with a loud voice and have the mainstream media on their side. Those who support the Second Amendment and individual gun-rights can sometimes feel outnumbered. But there are many influential people who are gun-rights advocates.

People Who Support the Right to Keep and Bear Arms

The Second Amendment of the Constitution guarantees citizens the right to keep and bear arms. While there are those who would ignore that right, and call for the registration and confiscation of guns, there are others who adamantly support that right. These people are leaders of national organizations, politicians, talk show hosts, sheriffs, activists and even celebrities. Gun-rights supporters need only look to this list to know that all is not lost and they are not alone.

Wayne LaPierreWayne LaPierre

Wayne LaPierre has served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Rifle Association since 1991. He is an outspoken opponent of government efforts at gun control, especially universal background checks, which he believes will lead to a national registration of gun owners, and any limits on law-abiding citizens access to semi-automatic weapons. He has authored many books about gun rights and gives speeches around the country. He is most famous for the quote “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun”.

Larry PrattLarry Pratt

Larry Pratt serves as the Executive Director of Gun Owners of America, a 300,000 member strong gun rights organization. He has appeared on many national radio and television talk shows and frequently debates gun control advocates. He has also written a couple of books on the rights of gun owners and occasionally authors a column, which appears in many newspapers across the nation.

Dudley BrownDudley Brown

Dudley Brown is the Executive Director of the National Association for Gun Rights. He has famously called the NAGR the “no-compromise” gun lobby, and is sometimes critical of the efforts of the NRA in combating gun control efforts, believing they have grown soft and compromise too often on gun control measures. He lives in Colorado and has worked tirelessly to expand the rights of gun owners there.

Charlton HestonCharlton Heston

Although he passed away in 2008, Charlton Heston is still an influential figure in the gun-rights debate. A renowned actor and civil rights activist, he also served as the President of the NRA from 1998-2003. He is perhaps best known to gun-rights enthusiasts for the trademark ending to his speeches, in which he held his rifle up and declared that the gun controllers would only get his gun once they “pry it from my cold, dead hand”.

Senator Rand PaulSenator Rand Paul (KY)

Considered by many to be the frontrunner for the GOP nomination in the 2016 Presidential race, Senator Rand Paulis a staunch defender of the Constitution. The son of libertarian hero Ron Paul, Rand has followed close to his father’s footsteps in his opposition to a big government. He gained national attention recently with his 13-hour filibuster on the Senate floor over the issue of the government’s use of drone strikes on American citizens. He is leading the opposition in the Senate to the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.

Senator Ted CruzSenator Ted Cruz (TX)

Another defender of the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms in the Senate is Ted Cruz. Elected in 2012, he beat the establishment candidate from the Republican Party in the primary that favored gun control. Known to some as the “Cruz Missile”, in the recent debate in the Senate over a renewed assault weapons ban, he was an outspoken critic of Senator Feinstein’s bill to ban assault weapons. He has joined Senator Rand Paul in opposing the UN treaty that would heavily regulate and control the firearms industry.

Senator Mike LeeSenator Mike Lee (UT)

Joining Senators Rand Paul and Ted Cruz as the rising stars in the GOP is Utah’s Mike Lee. He was elected to the Senate in 2010. A renowned attorney, he has served in various aspects and levels of government, even clerking for Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. He is well versed in the Constitution and a firm believer in the Second Amendment. Lee has opposed the recent efforts at government expansion of gun control, because he stands for a limited government and personal responsibility.

Governor Rick PerryGovernor Rick Perry (TX)

Governor Rick Perry is a strong believer in the individual’s right to keep and bear arms. He is an avid hunter and gun owner. It is even rumored that he takes his handgun with him when he jogs or walks his dog. While some may question his stance on certain issues like immigration, there is no doubt that he stands strong on the Second Amendment.

Texas Attorney General Greg AbbottTexas Attorney General Greg Abbott

Attorney General of Texas Greg Abbott has claimed that the gun control debate was settled in 1791, when the Second Amendment was ratified. He is a hunter and a member of the NRA and the Texas State Rifle Association. He was a lead Attorney General representing 31 states in the Supreme Court hearing of DC v. Heller, which ruled outright gun bans unconstitutional. He has vowed to fight any Federal attempts to restrict gun rights in the state of Texas. Abbott has openly courted firearms manufacturers to relocate to Texas from other states that are not so gun friendly.

John BoltonFormer Ambassador to the UN John Bolton

She believes in individual freedom and liberty, and the right to be left alone by government. A hunter and gun owner, she has opposed Federal overreach on gun control. She recently gave a rousing speech to the crowd at the 2013 NRA Convention in Houston, Texas.

Sheriff David ClarkeSheriff David Clarke and CSPOA

The Sheriff of Milwaukee County David Clarke made headlines recently with a radio ad urging Milwaukeeans to arm themselves for protection. He said that calling 911 may not always be the best option in the event of an emergency and that citizens have a right and a duty to defend themselves and others. He has also vowed to uphold his oath to the Constitution and resist any Federal gun control measures that are in violation of the Second Amendment. More than 430 other Sheriffs and Police Chiefs around the country join him in this strong stance. An organization called the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association has provided a list of these Sheriffs and Police Chiefs.

John R. Lott, Jr.John R. Lott, Jr.

This book has been referred to as “the bible of the gun-rights movement” by Fox News host Chris Wallace. He has written other books and numerous articles breaking down the numbers of decreasing crime rates and how they relate to increased gun ownership. He is a frequent guest on national radio and television talk shows.

Glenn BeckGlenn Beck

Radio and television personality Glenn Beck recently moved from New York to Texas to start his own media company, The Blaze. Alex JonesAlex Jones

A pioneer in alternative news, Alex Jones hosts a radio show and is the head of Infowars.com. While many view him as a conspiracy theorist, much of what he talks about proves to be true. He constantly warns of the tyranny of the coming New World Order and rightly views the Second Amendment and armed citizens as the best way, but last resort, to resist such tyranny. He made national headlines early in 2013 by confronting CNN host Piers Morgan about his support for British style gun control in America. One of his catchphrases is “the answer to 1984 is 1776”.

Ben ShapiroBen Shapiro

Bruce WillisBruce Willis

Perhaps best known for his role in the “Die Hard” movies, Bruce Willis is an actor and musician. He opposes gun control because he says, “if you take guns away from legal gun owners, then the only people who will have guns are the bad guys.” He has spoken out against the latest round of gun control measures by wondering which rights would be taken away next after the Second Amendment is infringed.

Tom SelleckTom Selleck

Tom Selleck, a television and movie star, is most notable for his television show “Magnum PI” in the 1980s. Less well known about him is that he sits on the Board of Directors of the NRA. He was close friends with Charlton Heston and briefly considered filling his role as President when Heston stepped down in 2003. Selleck has donated seven of the firearms he used in his films to the NRA museum.

Brad Pitt and Angelina JolieBrad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

He also stated that guns in the hands of citizens are a protection from criminals and a last resort against tyranny.

Kyle CoplenKyle Coplen

Kyle Coplen is the founder of the Armed Citizens Project. A graduate student of the University of Houston, Kyle is conducting an experiment to prove that more guns in a community will reduce crime. His non-profit organization is taking donations to purchase shotguns, to be used for home defense against criminals, that will be given to qualifying individuals in mid to high crime areas of several American cities. To be eligible for one of these free defensive shotguns, individuals must pass a background check and complete a safety and tactical training course, provided for free by the Armed Citizens Project.

His partner at FPSRussia, Keith Ratliff, was found dead in January 2013 of a suspected homicide. Kyle’s property, as well as his father’s farm, were raided by the ATF in March 2013, allegedly to search for illegal explosives. you left out Tim Schmidt, founder of (USCCA)

I would like to add Sheriff Terry Maketa, El Paso County, Colorado along with 36 other sheriffs from Colorado. Lets not forget actress Milla Jovovich, one of the few pro-gun Hollywood actors/actresses.

Jere Matlock

And don’t forget Dr. Ignatius Piazza of Front Sight Firearms Training Institute, who has been working to help preserve our 2nd Amendment rights for nearly 20 years. He has trained tens of thousands of people in responsible gun ownership, as anyone who has attended a 2- or 4-day course at Front Sight can attest.

Thanks for including Sheriff Clark. Honorable mention to Sheriff Schmidt of Washington County, WI who is less known but an avid supporter of the Constitution.
A few surprises for me, thanks for the info on why they were selected.

I have a real issue with Dudley Brown being pro gun. Compared to NRA he has done nothing but collect money from unsuspecting gun owners. He couldn’t even sway his own State of Colorado from passing outlandish gun laws. And, shame on Senator Rand Paul for promoting this guy. I am a LIFE MEMBER of NRA and they are the fore runners against gun banning idiots.

Justin Hogan

Where is Adam Kokesh? Certainly he deserves a spot for taking action by organizing the armed march on DC to take place on July 4th. Some would say he should be at the top of the list.

Smart Old Fart

I understand your sentiments regarding Adam Kokesh and his proposed July 4th
ARMED MARCH on the CAPITOL. Please know that in truth his plans are NOT ORGANIZED in the least, they are strategically un-wise and detrimental to our never-ending fight to retain our 2nd Amendment rights. IMO, Kokesh is a loose cannon with a short fuse and should not be encouraged. Such an armed protest (at this time) will only give fuel to the Gun-Grabbers current attack and do irreparable long-term damage to our mission.

I’m sure Kokesh has patriotic intentions and is promoting what he feels is the
right tactical move for resolving this 2nd Amendment fight – BUT while my
heart might empathize with him, my brain cries NO, NO, NO, NO!

Justin, please go on-line and read more about Adam Kokesh, his military history and previous life. This totally irresponsible and absolutely illegal ARMED MARCH on Washington D.C. is the most outrageous foolhardy idea I could imagine. It is certain to result in violence, injury and even death on the MALL in DC. This is not the way to further our cause. IT COULD SET US BACK TO THE POINT THAT OUR 2nd AMENDMENT RIGHTS WILL BE LOST FOREVER.

Justin Hogan

I would reply with details but this format is anything but secure. I assure you, Adams’ intentions are peaceful and every effort is being made to keep it that way. For more info, you can read through the events details regarding developing rules and procedures for the event.

At some point, people need to take a stand.

FYI, Adam was arrested, without cause, on Sat. and, at present, is being held without bail or a phone call in a Federal Prison in Philly. He apparently ruffled their feathers.

Justin Hogan

This country was created out of outrageous, foolhardy ideas. and was also absolutely illegal.

It’s interesting that there are 2 Texas state-level politicians mentioned, yet Texas has some of the worst carry laws outside of the blue states.

That you failed to include Dave Kopel is completely egregious. Dave Kopel is one of the most prodigious Second Amendment legal scholars of the day and he has authored more pro-Second Amendment articles, provided Supreme Court Amicus Briefs, testified before Congress and so many other committees you swould be staggered,

I honestly think you should award Dave a “Top of the Top” award or something. I mean, not including Dave in this list – while you have (although he’s a nice guy) Clint Eastwood (!) – is a serious ommission.

Although New York is an anti gun Socialist State there are a number of Senators that are attempting to fight the good fight including:

Senator Greg Ball

Assemblyman Steve Katz

Senator Kathleen Marchione

Just to name a few.

Don’t forget Sheriff Donald Smith. He is the head of the Sheriff’s and wrote and spoke out against Cumo’s Safe Act. You can find their outrage with the new laws online, in USA Today and on Fox News.

Adelbert Waldron

“Sheriffs continue to speak out”

Posted on May 21, 2013 at 11:17 am
by Jimmy Vielkind, Capitol bureau in Andrew Cuomo, Guns

I reported this morning about a meeting between Gov. Andrew Cuomo and leaders of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association, during which Cuomo told the sheriffs to keep quiet about the SAFE Act.

Many sheriffs, who are elected on the county level, oppose the law and have said so publicly. The Sheriffs’ Association as well as several elected sheriffs last week signed an amicus brief supporting a federal court challenge to the new gun control law. One of the named parties was Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith, the past-president of the association.

I reached out to Smith as I reported the article. He said he did not attend the meeting with Cuomo, who has said the SAFE Act will save lives. Smith did offer these thoughts:

“I have joined in the amicus brief because I feel so strongly that what is at stake in this case is a basic, fundamental and constitutional right of our citizens. All our rights as set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are put at risk if citizens are stripped of their ability to defend themselves in accordance with the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights. The Second Amendment is about more than hunting and target shooting—it’s about good citizens being able to protect themselves and their families against threats to their life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.”

“One of my deepest concerns is that drug dealers, gang members, and felons will always skirt the laws to obtain any kind of gun they want and thus the strictures on gun ownership in the new law will effectively penalize only law abiding citizens. Similarly, such drug dealers, gang members and felons are not going to abide by the restriction against loading more than seven bullets in the guns they carry. The only sure effect of those provisions of the law will be to put innocent gun owners at a potentially fatal tactical disadvantage against better armed criminals.”

“Although law enforcement officers are trained, equipped and ready to respond to acts of armed violence, their response time is often measured in minutes, while in many instances, citizens under attack have just seconds to ward off harm. Here in Putnam County we have one of the most well-armed communities in New York State, with over 10% of our residents having handgun licenses, and Putnam County has had the lowest crime rate in the State of New York for three consecutive years.”

“We are a nation of laws, in which the rule of law must be observed. We in law enforcement cannot cherry-pick the laws we like and choose to enforce only the ones we favor, because that is a slippery slope that leads ultimately to anarchy. Instead, when we perceive that a law is not well designed and will not promote the public good, we have a duty to do what we can within the legal processes to oppose and change that law and to help craft a better one. That is what I and so many of my colleagues in law enforcement are trying to do in this case.”

There is also a NY Senator that stood up in front of Gun Owners at a SCOPE Candidates Night and told us he had our backs. He then squeaked out a win. Not two months later, voted for the NY SAFE ACT.
No Politician should be on that list and the celebrities! Sure they will come to your function and speak for anywhere from 30 to 100 k. They shouldn’t be on that list either. Sorry. But I work with advocates who are really in the fight and not only don’t they get paid but are investing time and money they can’t afford. Of course the list is about being influential. Who exactly are they influencing? Again speaking of the Politicians and celebrities.

Yet you don’t name names…

Well, I know Luke meant well but the problem in creating any kind of list for anything is you are bound to miss people that others feel very passionate about and you are bound to include people others will seriously question . . . as we can all no doubt see from the comments.

While I question several of these people on this list myself, my item of most concern is the omission of EVERY lawful gun owner and second amendment advocate . . . the everyday pro gun people themselves! It is the little unknown folks who on a daily basis do millions of things and hold millions of conversation directed at strengthening our rights. It is the lonely unknown American from town after town that makes the largest difference to our cause every single day.

I would praise them way before I even mentioned some of the Hollywood folks or dubious politicians that “claim” to be pro-gun but when the chips are on the line are suddenly absent.

… I have been & am a proud member of the NRA agree with its basic principles… however, I don’t wish to be associated with certain ‘advocates’… 1) Wayne La Pierre… too regimented to argue any solutions to gun control differences… will always reject any compromise, regardless of any meaningful value… 2) Sen Ted Cruz.. read his public comments… it’s obvious.. 3) Sarah Palin… should not be a spokesperson for gun rights advocates.. doesn’t have the background/experience, nor the intellectual perspicacity to argue the gun rights cause… 4) Glenn Beck… too radical/off the wall (nuts) .. not in tune with the mainstream proponents of gun rights.. 5) Sean Hannity.. I admit I do watch his show, but only for amusement.. not real news from real reporters… 6) Cody Wilson… seriously… are we all nuts?!!? is anyone really supporting this nut??? ..

I reiterate, I totally support Second Amendment Gun Rights.. but not the radical extremists supporting our cause!… stubborn doesn’t work!!

Great list! It’s also nice to see a lot of young faces on it; it shows the love of firearms is being passed to my generation.

Am I the only one with a hanging jaw at the Pitt/Jolie thing?!?!

Steve Gwilt

I am another vote for Dr. Ignatius Piazza. I put him above the listed politicians and movie stars.

Dont forget Dave Mustaine, Adam Baldwin (aka Animal Mother), John Wayne, ect

JUSTICE FOR AARON NEAMES!!!!!! This is Aaron Neames, my boyfriend. Who was unjustly charged with attempted 2nd degree murder on a man who broke into our home and held my friends and a teenager who is like my son hostage for three hours at gunpoint while waiting for Aaron to come home so he could rob and kill him!! Aaron protected his home and family, and was charged and treated like a criminal. After Jarreau fled he had already called others to back him up and insinuated that he was going to retrieve another weapon so Aaron defended his home. He prevented 4 deaths, including a minor, and possibly many more. He had already robbed two others and said he was coming back. Aaron is a hero. We need as much support as possible. #justiceforaaron on facebook

Donna Greathouse

Donald Trump was DELIBERATELY left off this list. He’s ranked #3 for years and years on the NRA 100 Most Influential Gun Rights Advocates. NO BIAS HERE!! A**holes.

Barry Fitzgerald

If it were not for attorneys, Alan Gura, Clark Neily, as well as Bob Levy with the Cato Institute there would have never been a Heller v. District of Columbia and the 2nd Amendment would never have been held to be an individual right. Had it not been for Dick Heller, the plaintiff, there would not have been a lawsuit.

Alan Gura filed and won McDonald v. Chicago backed financially by Alan Gotlieb with the 2nd Amendment Foundation. Of course the late Otis McDonald was the plaintiff and an effective gun rights advocate.

It is a testament to to the uninformed not to have Alan Gura on the list. Not only did he bring out the most significant legal change regarding gun rights in our history but his is involved in at least a dozen gun rights litigation cases right now. To have neocons John Bolton and Mark Levin on the list, actors Jolie and Pitt is the most ridicules thing I have ever read.
