WOOD RIVER, IL – Charges have been filed following a Dec. 26 shooting in Wood River, where a domestic battery incident escalated into a violent confrontation. The suspect, a 28-year-old male, faces serious charges including aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated domestic battery.
As reported by the Telegraph, the situation began early in the morning when police responded to a report of domestic battery. The female victim had fled to her parents’ home for safety. Shortly after, reports of gunfire led police to the scene of a shooting involving the woman’s father and the suspect.
According to police, the father, who possesses a concealed carry permit, confronted the suspect. This confrontation quickly turned physical, with the suspect reportedly striking the father and knocking him to the ground. In self-defense, the father shot the suspect. During the ensuing struggle, the suspect managed to fire the father’s weapon, hitting him in the hand. However, due to the firearm’s magazine being ejected during the scuffle, only one shot was fired by the suspect.
Both men were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect has since been remanded to jail, while the woman’s father has not been charged.
Madison County State’s Attorney commented on the thorough review conducted by the office and commended the local police department and other agencies involved in the investigation. This case underlines the complexities of self-defense laws and the consequences of domestic disputes escalating into violence.
