HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A heroic middle school teacher in Houston is being celebrated for his brave actions that saved a 15-year-old girl from a harrowing assault. The incident unfolded just before midnight on July 28th in an apartment complex on Woodforest Boulevard, just north of I-10 between Normandy Street and Uvalde Road, when David Garza, upon hearing desperate cries for help, intervened decisively with his firearm.

According to Harris County Sheriff’s Office investigators, the teen had just gotten off a METRO bus when she was followed and attacked by a man. The attacker, described as wearing a black hoodie with a white Reebok logo, blue jeans, and white tennis shoes, began assaulting the girl and attempting to remove her clothing.

David Garza, who lives in the apartment complex, recounted the chilling scene. “I looked out the window and I saw a man beating up a woman on the ground… trying to take her clothes off,” Garza said. He immediately grabbed his gun and rushed outside to confront the assailant.

In a dramatic moment captured on video, Garza is seen leaping into action. “I ran outside, asked what’s going on. The girl screamed, ‘I’m 15, help me!’ I pointed the gun at him and told him to get off her,” Garza recounted. The suspect, who had the girl by the hair, released her immediately and fled when confronted. Garza chased the attacker, ensuring the girl’s safety.

A neighbor, who witnessed the event, praised Garza’s intervention. “At first, I was scared, I thought she was going to get raped. I think if he didn’t come out, she would have gotten raped,” the neighbor said.

Andy Kahan, a victim advocate for Crime Stoppers, expressed gratitude for Garza’s quick-thinking and valor. “I take my hat off to you — you did the right thing,” Kahan said, emphasizing the need to apprehend the suspect swiftly to prevent future attacks.

Garza, who has a history of intervening in such incidents, remained humble about his actions. “I think it’s something anyone else would have done — come help a child,” he said. His courage and swift response undoubtedly prevented a tragic outcome that night.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. Anyone with information is urged to call 713-222-TIPS (8477), submit tips online at www.crime-stoppers.org, or use the Crime Stoppers mobile app. Tips and calls made directly to Crime Stoppers remain anonymous and are eligible for the reward.

In instances like these, the importance of community vigilance and readiness to act cannot be overstated. David Garza’s bravery and quick decision to intervene set a powerful example of selflessness and courage. When it comes to protecting children from clear and present danger, there is no hesitation. Garza’s actions remind us all of the critical role responsible gun owners can play in ensuring the safety of our communities.

Many smart people correctly say that the best course of action is not to get involved in something that does not directly involve you or your family…but sometimes you just can’t stand by and see evil win. As President John F. Kennedy quoted Edmund Burkein 1961: “As the great parliamentarian Edmund Burke said, ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.’” Make no mistake, there is a risk, so it is an individual decision. Choose wisely.
