Homeowner Defends Family from Intruder Who Fatally Stabbed a 77-Year-Old Woman Days Prior

FAYETTE COUNTY, GA – A Georgia homeowner shot an early morning intruder twice to defend himself and his family; the intruder is suspected of having fatally stabbed a 77-year-old woman.

A homeowner in Fayette Country, GA, was home with his family on the morning of Sept. 14. He heard what sounded like an intruder in their basement, so he called the police to report the break-in and armed himself with a handgun.

He confronted the intruder in the basement and found that he was armed with a knife. He warned the intruder and fired one shot, hitting the armed intruder. The homeowner then retreated to the top of the basement stairs to protect his family on the second floor.

The wounded suspect advanced, telling the homeowner, “You’re going to have to kill me.” Fearing for his and his family’s life, the homeowner fired a second shot, which ended the threat.

The police arrived on the scene as the second shot was fired. Authorities found the suspect coming down the stairs with two gunshot wounds. There was a struggle between the suspect and the police while taking him into custody. He was then transported to the hospital and charged with home invasion, burglary, and theft by receiving. He is also facing murder charges for stabbing a 77-year-old woman to death in Ohio on Sept. 9.

This harrowing incident in Fayette County underscores the very real dangers homeowners can face, even in the sanctuary of their own homes. This was a random act of violence, and who knows what the suspect had planned after gaining access to the home.
