ELGIN, IL – The Elgin Police Department has made an arrest in a shooting incident that occurred on June 16, 2024, in the 600 block of Villa St. The adult male victim, who sustained gunshot wounds during the altercation, has succumbed to his injuries, as confirmed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
On the night of June 16, at approximately 11:36 p.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found an adult male with gunshot injuries. The victim was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Detectives from the Major Investigations Division quickly began their investigation. According to their findings, an altercation had broken out between the adult male and a 16-year-old juvenile. During the confrontation, the adult displayed a knife, prompting the juvenile to discharge a firearm in self-defense, striking the adult male.
On June 18, 2024, the juvenile suspect was taken into custody without incident. After reviewing the case, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office determined that the shooting was indeed an act of self-defense. However, the juvenile was charged with several firearm-related offenses:
- Unlawful Possession of a Firearm/No FOID, a Class 3 Felony
- Three counts of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, a Class 4 Felony
The juvenile is currently being held at the Kane County Youth Home.
The Elgin Police Department reminds the public that an arrest does not imply guilt, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
