Open carry is legal in Michigan provided that:
- You are 18 years of age or older
- Lawfully purchased and are the owner of the pistol
You can only carry a handgun in your automobile in Michigan if you have a Michigan Concealed Pistol License or a license or permit from the state you reside in. Long guns can be in the automobile but must be unloaded and encased or secured in the trunk.
The following places are off-limits when carrying a firearm in Michigan. [source]
- A depository financial institution or a subsidiary or affiliate of a depository financial institution.
- A church or other house of religious worship.
- A court.
- A theatre
- A sports arena.
- A day care center.
- A hospital.
- An establishment licensed under the Michigan liquor control act, Act No. 8 of the Public Acts of the Extra Session of 1933, being sections 436.1 to 436.58 of the Michigan Compiled Law
