DALLAS, TX – Robbers posing as maintenance workers got a rude awakening when they thought the apartment was vacant after speaking to the tenant through a Ring doorbell camera.
Around 6 PM this past Saturday afternoon, a man and his brother were inside his apartment in Dallas, TX, when an armed man posing as a maintenance worker knocked on his door and ran his Blink doorbell camera. The suspect stated he was there to change his air filters.
When the tenant told the suspect no one was him, the suspect and accomplice attempted to kick the door down. Realizing it was a break-in, the tenant grabbed his handgun and fired 13 rounds through the door. This caused the suspects to flee, but according to a responding officer who found casings outside the apartment, the suspects fired back.
Luckily, no one in the apartment was harmed. A playpen could be seen in the front room after the police were on the scene, but it seems there was no child in it at the time, thankfully.
This is precisely why you should never open the door to strangers. And all of the more reason to get a doorbell camera with a feature to communicate with anyone on the other end
Glad the victim was okay. A couple of things.
One, nice sturdy door. That’s a good thing.
Two, good job not opening the door.
Three, shooting through the door is not usually a good idea. Aside from potential legal issues, the bullets keep on going and you have no idea where they will end up. You can see them hitting the wall across from the door. Good thing they didn’t go through the door to the apartment across the way and into the apartment.
