Wyoming House Passes Bill to Eliminate Many Gun-Free Zones, Heads to Senate

CHEYENNE, WY — A significant step toward expanded gun rights in Wyoming was taken Thursday as House Bill 172, aimed at reducing the number of gun-free zones across the state, passed the Wyoming House of Representatives with a decisive 50-10 vote. The bill now moves to the Senate, where it will face further debate and a critical vote.

The measure is similar to legislation passed in 2024 that was vetoed by Governor Mark Gordon. However, this year’s overwhelming House vote suggests that lawmakers may have the numbers needed to override a veto should it occur again. A two-thirds majority in both chambers is required to overturn a gubernatorial veto, and Thursday’s vote in the House far exceeded that threshold.

What House Bill 172 Would Change

House Bill 172 seeks to eliminate several designated gun-free zones in Wyoming. If passed, the legislation would allow law-abiding citizens with valid concealed carry permits to carry firearms in certain places currently prohibited under state law. These include government meetings, athletic events, and other public venues.

It’s worth noting that the bill does not remove all restrictions. Concealed carry in public schools and college campuses would still require individuals to obtain specific permits and adhere to existing regulations. This ensures that only those who meet stringent requirements would be allowed to carry in these sensitive areas.

Overcoming Previous Hurdles

In 2024, similar legislation passed through the legislature but was ultimately vetoed by Governor Gordon. At the time, Gordon cited concerns about public safety and the need for local control in sensitive areas. However, lawmakers supporting this year’s bill argue that the veto failed to account for the reality that gun-free zones do little to prevent crime and instead leave law-abiding citizens defenseless.

The overwhelming support in the House this time around reflects growing momentum for the measure and increasing frustration among legislators and residents with policies that restrict the rights of responsible gun owners.

The Case for Ending Gun-Free Zones

Gun-free zones create targets for criminals, as those intent on committing violence are unlikely to follow laws prohibiting firearms. Meanwhile, law-abiding citizens are left defenseless, unable to protect themselves or others.

“Gun-free zones disarm the people who follow the law, not those who intend to break it,” said one legislator during debate on the bill. “This bill restores the ability of law-abiding Wyomingites to exercise their right to self-defense in more areas.”

Critics of the bill worry about the potential for increased risks in public spaces, but supporters counter that concealed carry permit holders are thoroughly vetted and trained, and statistics show they are among the most law-abiding citizens in the country.

What’s Next for House Bill 172?

The bill now moves to the Senate, where it will face another round of discussion and voting. If it passes the Senate, it will be sent to Governor Gordon’s desk once again. With the strong support in the House, lawmakers may have the numbers to override a veto if necessary, making this year’s attempt at reducing gun-free zones potentially more successful than last year’s.

A Step Toward Stronger Self-Defense Rights

House Bill 172 represents a significant step forward in protecting the rights of responsible gun owners in Wyoming. By reducing the number of gun-free zones, the legislation prioritizes self-defense and acknowledges the reality that criminals do not obey laws.

For concealed carriers, it’s a reminder of the importance of staying informed about where they can legally carry and ensuring they are always prepared to act responsibly. While Wyoming is already one of the most gun-friendly states in the country, this bill could further solidify its commitment to the Second Amendment.
