URBANA, IL — On Saturday, November 16, 2024, a road rage incident escalated into a shooting at the intersection of Busey Avenue and Park Street. Urbana police responded to the scene at approximately 4:30 PM after receiving reports of a shooting with injuries.
The incident began east of the location near Five Points, where a verbal altercation occurred between the driver of a solo vehicle and the occupants of another car—a female driver and her male passenger. The solo driver attempted to avoid further conflict by driving away, ultimately pulling into the parking lot of Carle Hospital before exiting back onto Park Street. Despite his efforts, the other vehicle continued to follow him westbound on University Avenue, eventually stopping at Busey Avenue and Park Street.
The confrontation escalated when both occupants of the pursuing vehicle exited their car. The female, armed with a baseball bat, approached the solo driver alongside the male passenger, who allegedly kept one hand under his shirt, leading the solo driver to believe he might be armed. The solo driver, a concealed carry permit holder, remained inside his vehicle and drew his legally carried firearm. Fearing for his safety, he fired multiple rounds, striking the male passenger.
The solo driver immediately called 911 to report the shooting. The injured male passenger was transported to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery and remains in intensive care. No arrests have been made as of now, and the investigation is ongoing.
