A father in Gainesville, Florida, is being praised for his quick actions in protecting his daughter from her abusive ex-boyfriend.
Police responded to a domestic dispute at the Polos Apartments complex on Saturday, where an unidentified man allegedly physically assaulted his ex-girlfriend. However, the police arrived after the assailant had left. The woman’s father had come to the apartment after the assault.
Later, about 30 minutes after the police report was taken, the ex-boyfriend returned to the apartment and “made entry” while the woman’s father was present. The father, who was armed, was able to protect his daughter and shot the suspect once in the chest.
Thankfully, the father was armed and able to protect his daughter from further assault. Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene. Despite attempts at CPR by responding officers, the suspect was pronounced dead by EMS.
This incident highlights the importance of responsible gun ownership and the need for individuals to protect themselves and their loved ones. In this case, the father’s quick thinking and access to a firearm prevented further harm to his daughter. It also serves as a reminder of the ongoing issue of domestic violence and the need for victims to have the resources and support necessary to escape abusive situations.
The Gainesville Police Department is continuing its investigation into the incident. The father has not been charged with a crime, as Florida has a “stand your ground” law that allows individuals to use deadly force in self-defense without fear of prosecution.
