LOUISVILLE, KY — A terrifying road rage incident in Louisville on February 26 ended with one man shot and another facing multiple charges after a violent confrontation escalated to the point of deadly force.

According to Louisville Metro Police, the incident began around 9:30 a.m. near Taylor Boulevard and Beecher Street, when 41-year-old Graham Bain allegedly cut off a van carrying a man and his three young granddaughters. Dashcam footage from the van captured what happened next — a dangerous pursuit where Bain repeatedly brake-checked the van, chased it through traffic, and ultimately began ramming the vehicle.

The chase continued through residential neighborhoods and even into a church parking lot, with the van’s driver attempting to escape the aggression. The situation escalated further when Bain rammed the van with enough force to flatten its tires, disabling the vehicle on Carlisle Avenue. According to police and eyewitness accounts, Bain then rammed the van again at high speed, nearly flipping it over while the children were still inside.

Fearing for his and his granddaughters’ safety, the driver of the van fired a warning shot in an attempt to stop the attack. However, the pursuit continued. Finally, after the final ramming incident, the grandfather drew his firearm again and shot Bain once in the stomach when Bain appeared to be trying to put his vehicle back into gear, possibly to strike the van once more.

Bain was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to survive. He has been charged with four counts of wanton endangerment. The van’s driver, who has not been publicly identified, is not currently facing any charges, and police have credited the dashcam footage with helping establish the sequence of events.

The Danger of Warning Shots

This case highlights a recurring issue in self-defense situations: the use of warning shots. While the grandfather was justified in defending himself and his grandchildren from what could reasonably be considered a deadly threat — an aggressive attacker using a vehicle as a weapon — the warning shot introduced unnecessary risks.

As discussed in USACarry.com’s guide to warning shots, firing a warning shot can lead to legal complications and safety hazards. Bullets that miss their intended target could strike bystanders, cause property damage, or further escalate an already tense situation. In this case, Bain was not deterred by the warning shot, illustrating why defensive gun use should focus on stopping the threat directly rather than attempting to scare the attacker away.

When Vehicles Become Deadly Weapons

This incident also serves as a stark reminder that vehicles can easily become instruments of deadly force. As USACarry.com’s road rage safety tips explain, it is critical to de-escalate and avoid engagement whenever possible — but when a vehicle is used to repeatedly ram another car, especially one carrying children, the situation clearly crosses into a life-threatening attack. In such cases, the use of defensive force may be legally justified to prevent imminent serious injury or death.

This frightening ordeal ended with no loss of life, but it underscores the importance of maintaining situational awareness, equipping vehicles with dashcams, and understanding both the legal responsibilities and practical realities of armed self-defense.

The story says the incident ended with one man shot, and another facing charges. But then later on, it says the defender is not facing any charges. Was there a third man in this story?

I live in Louisville, 10 miles from this incident, we have both open and Constitutional Carry here as well as Stand Your Ground and Castle Doctrine. He didn’t need to fire the warning shot, and he wont be charged due to Bains actions. I myself carry every day due to instances such as this. The problem with Louisville is that we have almost NO COPS on the streets any longer to stop this due to the City allowing 150 officers leaving.
