OCEANSIDE, CA — A suspected home invasion ended tragically when an intruder was fatally shot by a resident on the 4100 block of Diamond Circle. The incident occurred on Monday evening at around 7:22 p.m., according to Oceanside Police.
The incident began when an unknown man, reportedly armed with a rock and a stick, entered the backyard of the residence. The suspect then made his way inside through a bedroom sliding door, which can be seen shattered in the news footage below. At the time, two residents—a man and a woman—were inside the home, with the female resident in the bedroom.
Upon entering, the intruder threw a rock at the male resident, hitting him in the face. In response, the injured resident retrieved a firearm and discharged at least three rounds, striking the suspect once in the chest. Despite emergency responders’ attempts to administer life-saving measures, the intruder, identified as a 22-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The responding officers from the Oceanside Police Department’s Crimes of Violence Unit are treating the incident as a potential self-defense case. The resident who fired the shots was not arrested, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Neighbors, including Isabel and Matthew Cole, recounted their shock and concern following the incident. Although they did not hear the gunshots, they recalled hearing a muffled scream and were later informed by neighbors about the ongoing break-ins. The suspect had reportedly attempted to break into multiple homes in the neighborhood, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
Residents expressed their disbelief at the incident, highlighting the quiet nature of their community. The Coles noted that they often felt safe walking outside at night, making the intrusion all the more alarming. Neighbors voiced their relief that the incident did not escalate further but acknowledged the unease it has brought to the area.
This unfortunate event underscores the importance of being prepared for unexpected threats, even in seemingly safe neighborhoods. Homeowners should consider fortifying entry points, such as sliding doors, and have a home defense plan. In this case, the resident’s quick access to a firearm was crucial in preventing further harm. Remember, self-defense is a personal choice, and understanding local laws regarding the use of force is essential for responsible gun ownership.
The home intruder got what he deserved. The prosecuting attorney will probably charge the homeowner since he used a gun in the communist controlled state.
A person enters your home, shatters a window to enter, attacks the homeowner and he kills the intruder. Why investigate. It is cut and dried.
