A 42-year-old man from St. John, Missouri, was shot and killed after forcing his way into an occupied Normandy home he had been asked to leave earlier the same day. Jody Jordan reportedly returned armed with a firearm described as a machine gun and punched through the door before being shot multiple times inside.
Normandy police issued a public statement on August 26 confirming next-of-kin notification and ongoing investigator contact with Jordan’s family. The department also addressed criticism over its handling of the case, stating it would not release sensitive investigative details under public pressure while the criminal investigation remains open.

NORMANDY, MO — A 42-year-old man who had been asked to leave a Smithfield Place residence earlier in the day returned armed with a firearm described as a “machine gun,” forced his way into the occupied home by “punching his way inside,” and was shot multiple times inside the house, according to a news release from the Normandy Police Department.
Officers were dispatched to the 4200 block of Smithfield Place on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for a reported burglary in progress. In a release issued August 26 and signed by Chief Tameika Sanders, the department laid out what its preliminary investigation has established and made clear it does not intend to release much more while the case is open.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that the male subject had been involved in an earlier incident at the residence during which he was asked to leave the property,” the release states. “The subject later returned to the residence reportedly armed with a firearm described as a machine gun.”
He did not knock the second time. “According to information documented in the call notes and provided to responding officers, the subject had forced entry into the occupied residence by ‘punching his way inside,'” the department said. “As officers were responding to the burglary-in-progress call, the incident was subsequently updated to a shooting.”
Officers found him inside the house. “Upon arrival, officers located the male subject inside the residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds,” the release continues. “Officers immediately initiated life-saving measures, and the male was transported to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.”
Investigators identified him as 42-year-old Jody Jordan of St. John, Missouri, and the department says next of kin were notified within hours of the shooting. On August 14, the commander of the Criminal Investigations Division personally followed up with Jordan’s mother, and the release says investigators have had multiple additional contacts with family members since.

Jordan was asked to leave and he left. Then he came back, and the release says he came back armed. Deadly force is justified only against an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm, and what the department describes is an armed man punching his way through the door of a house with people inside it. I’d say that sounds like a justified shooting. Prosecutors make that call and not me, and the investigation is still open.
A large portion of the release is the department answering criticism directly. It extends condolences to Jordan’s family and acknowledges the loss, then states that “compassion for those grieving does not diminish the Department’s responsibility to protect the integrity of an active criminal investigation.” The department says it is “disappointed by inaccurate narratives suggesting that this incident has not been professionally investigated, that appropriate next-of-kin notification did not occur, or that the Department has failed to communicate with the family,” and that it “will not litigate an active criminal investigation through social media or the press, nor will public pressure dictate what sensitive investigative information is released or when it is released.”
