A man from Clayton, North Carolina, aged 21, is facing charges for possessing a weapon on educational property and carrying a concealed weapon. The incident occurred when Ubaldo Tellez Perez entered Clayton Middle School to pick up his sisters on Tuesday. The school’s weapons detection system alerted the authorities to the presence of a Glock 9mm handgun in Perez’s waistband. Perez claimed that he had no harmful intentions and was unaware of the gun’s presence until it was too late.
Perez cooperated with the authorities when they approached him and informed the school resource officer that he had forgotten about the weapon in his pocket. Johnston County Public Schools representative, Caitlin Furr, stated that bringing a gun onto campus is illegal, and the school district has invested in the weapons detection program. The incident confirmed their decision to install this system in their schools.
The weapon detection program, which combines radio frequency sensors with artificial intelligence screening to detect various types of weapons, is still in the pilot phase. The district is spending around $6 million to install the system in all of its schools. The main entrances of all schools will be equipped with this system.
According to Clayton Police Chief Greg Tart, the weapons detection system worked as intended, and no students or staff were in danger at any time. Perez was not arrested and is scheduled to appear in court on April 20.
It is currently unclear whether Ubaldo Tellez Perez had a concealed carry permit, which is required in North Carolina to carry a concealed weapon. It is essential to note that even with a concealed carry permit, there are places where carrying a firearm is prohibited by law, such as schools and government buildings. It is crucial to understand state firearm and concealed carry laws and know where it is permissible to carry a concealed weapon. Gun owners should take the time to research and understand their state’s laws and seek legal advice if necessary to avoid unintentionally breaking the law. Carrying a weapon is a significant responsibility, and ensuring that it is done safely and legally is of utmost importance.
In situations where firearms are not allowed in a particular place or building, gun owners must have a way to secure their firearm when leaving it in their vehicle. Leaving a firearm unsecured in a car can lead to it being stolen or accessed by someone unauthorized, which can lead to dangerous situations. It is essential to have a secure lockbox or safe in your vehicle to store your firearm while it is unattended. It is crucial to remember that even when leaving a firearm in a vehicle, it should be secured out of sight, and it is still important to know state laws regarding leaving firearms in vehicles. Proper storage of firearms is critical to ensure the safety of the gun owner and the public.
