Chicago, IL – Last Tuesday morning around 9:30 AM, a postal worker was delivering mail in a Chicago suburb when a man approached him. The man was armed and demanded the mailman hand over the keys to his mail truck, obviously looking for a score of valuable contents from the mail and packages inside.
A witness saw what was taking place and stepped in. According to other witnesses, the suspect and Good Samaritan exchanged words and gunfire. The suspect fled to his getaway car, which had three other suspects in it. The police and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are still searching for the suspects and are offering up a $50,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest.
Would you have gotten involved? No answer to that is right or wrong, as, to quote Varg Freeborn from his book Violence of Mind, everyone has their own mission. That means you need to figure out who you are willing to defend when you venture out into the world with that gun strapped to your hip (if that’s where you carry). Obviously, you are willing to defend yourself but what about a complete stranger? These are all things we need to think about.
