HOUSTON, TX — A Houston homeowner shot a suspected home invader early Sunday morning after the intruder crashed a vehicle nearby, jumped a fence, and broke into the residence, according to the Houston Police Department.

The incident took place on Truman Street near the intersection of W Crosstimbers and Yale around 2 a.m. As reported by KHOU, the suspect wrecked his car, then fled on foot toward a nearby home.

Police say the suspect jumped a fence and smashed a window on a door to force entry into the residence. The homeowner was awake at the time and saw the intruder come inside.

“The homeowner was awake and alert and saw the suspect had illegally entered his home,” said Lt. Khan with the Houston Police Department. “He then produced a firearm from inside his house and ended up striking the suspect one time.”

The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive. HPD confirmed the homeowner was not injured during the encounter.

Police say the suspect and the homeowner did not know each other prior to the break-in. The investigation is ongoing.

The pattern in this case is strikingly similar to an incident I covered over the weekend in St. Petersburg, Florida, where a man crashed a vehicle nearby, fled on foot, and tried to force his way into an occupied home with a family inside before being fatally shot by the homeowner. Two separate states, two separate nights, and nearly identical circumstances.

Situations like these are a reminder of how quickly a quiet night can turn into a life-threatening encounter. A violent break-in can unfold in a matter of seconds, giving the people inside little warning and no time to call for help. The Houston homeowner noticed the break-in as it was happening and had immediate access to a firearm, which allowed him to respond to a violent intrusion in the seconds that mattered most.

Texas law recognizes the right of lawful occupants to use force, including deadly force, against an intruder who unlawfully and with force enters an occupied residence. The Second Amendment exists precisely so law-abiding Americans are not left defenseless against violent threats that appear without warning in the middle of the night. An armed citizen, awake and prepared, stopped a dangerous situation before it could escalate further.
