Everyone hates domestic disputes but no more than a man and a woman with her two children in Buffalo when her ex kicked in her front door brandishing a weapon. The woman fled to a bedroom as the ex opened fire.
The ex then exchanged gunfire with another man in the home. He lost that fight, ran from the home, and fell in the front yard. The woman fled the home to a safe place and called 911. When police arrived, they found the ex lying on his weapon. EMTs were unable to revive him.
The other man in the home left the scene, after checking to see if the ex was alone, to meet with his attorney who then called police to arrange a meeting at the Union County Sheriff’s office to give a statement.
It was learned by investigators that the shooting seems to have been the result of an earlier domestic violence call. The woman had even changed the locks because she feared for her and her children’s safety.
The ex had outstanding warrants for domestic violence and assault and battery.
After reviewing the case, local authorities determined that the shooting was in self-defense and that no charges would be filed.
Again, everyone hates these types of domestic disputes because of the insane acts of violence that ex’s often seem driven to commit. For those that think that having a gun in the home makes women and their children less safe should have a conversation with this mom who may very well be alive only because there was someone in the home that had and knew how to use one.
Leaving the scene for any reason other than to get to a safe place is generally not a good idea but it seems to have worked out for the other man in the home in this case. Going straight to his attorney was a good move though especially since he was apparently able to get in touch with him right away. I suspect that a nearly immediate call to police from the attorney helped a great deal though I imagine that most attorneys aren’t available after midnight on a Tuesday night.
