LEHIGH ACRES, FL — A Lehigh Acres man who was knocked to the ground by a pickaxe blow to the back shot the attacker standing over him Monday night, and the attacker is now the one sitting in jail on a felony charge, according to Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno.
Deputies responded to a property along Lake Avenue Monday night and found Eddie Jordan II with a gunshot wound to his right shin, as reported by WBBH. Marceno said deputies determined the victim shot Jordan after Jordan attacked him with a pickaxe.
According to the sheriff, the victim had told Jordan to leave the property. Jordan did not leave. He followed the victim with the pickaxe. He drove it into the victim’s back. The victim went down. Jordan stood over him and threatened to strike again. The victim fired, hitting Jordan in the shin, in what Marceno characterized as self-defense.
Monday night, neither man wanted to press charges, according to the sheriff. That is the kind of detail that tells me these two were not strangers, and it also tells me the dispute did not end when the shot was fired. It did not. WBBH reports deputies were called back to the same address Wednesday night for shots fired, and after that second incident the victim decided he wanted Jordan charged for the Monday attack.
On Thursday, deputies found Jordan in the area of a Circle K on Homestead Road North and took him into custody. He was booked into the Lee County jail Thursday morning on one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The charge is an allegation, and Jordan is presumed innocent unless convicted.
WBBH also spoke with a neighbor who described the home as a squatter problem, with constant gunfire and yelling, and the station reports Lee County has two open code violation cases against the property for nuisance accumulation. Deputies have now been to that address at least twice in one week.
More from USA Carry:
Two things I take from this. First, the victim turned his back on a man he had just ordered off the property, and the pickaxe found him there. Awareness is a mindset, and the person you have just confronted is the person you keep in front of you until he is gone. Second, once he was on the ground and hurt, he still got to his firearm and stopped the attack before the next blow landed. Fighting from your back with an injury is not a range drill most people practice. He managed it.
Jordan is in jail. The man he knocked down with a pickaxe is the complaining witness against him.
